Dear CACC,

Please join to welcome chi Thai Thi Hong Anh into our VNBIZ family.

Hong Anh (anh....@gmail.com) is a second year student at University of Humanities and Social Science (Dai Hoc Khoa Hoc Xa Hoi Nhan Van) on Dinh Tien Hoang street.  And she joins us via chi Thu Huong.  Thu HUong is the leader of TeenS and Hogn Anh is the member of the grouop.  (Thanks, thu Huong).

Welcome in, Hong Anh. Just so you know, your school is my school.  That is the place and I have the fondest memory.  I was called Dai Hoc Van Khoa, I studied philosophy, did student activities and played music, all at Dai Hoc Van Khoa (while trying to finish my l;aw degree at Dai Hoc Luat Khoa).

Hong Nhung, one of our admins in Saigon, graduated from DHKHXHNV.  So did Thanh Thanh, our TV reporter.  Dennis has been teaching at that school for years.  And a couple of other professors are in VNBIZ.  So, Hong Anh, your school has special connection with VNBIZ :-)  Welcome in, sister.

And act like your home here, OK?  Great to have you with us.

Have a great day!

Hoanh

Hello Bro Hoành, Hương, Sis Hồng Nhung, Sis Thanh Thanh, Mr Dennis and VNBIZ's bro & sis!
Thanks anh Hoành very much for accepting me into VNBIZ. Thanks Hương for your warm greetings.
I can feel the warm welcome and the friendly atmosphere here, VNBIZ. Thanks all of you very much, VNBIZ's bro & sis.
Anh Hoành, could you tell me more about our school at that time? Did it have any special features, any activities rather different from today's? When did you graduate from Philosophy Department? You studied 2 university at the same time? Was it difficult for you to manage to perfect them all? You know, in Japanese, because I'm studying Jap, ^___^,  you're my sempai (Tiền bối) & you're so sugoi (excellent) when pursuing 2 school at the same time.
And you said that you played music in the school, so what kind of music did you play? I love music very much, esp traditional lullabies of every country, Trịnh Công Sơn, Phú Quang, New Age, Pop Ballad,.... & I listen to it everyday but blushingly, I don't know how to play any musical instrument, I intend to start learning a traditional instrument like đàn tranh, or bamboo flute...so I'm eager to know about yr instrument & your favorite kind of music...or some things like that....  .  And, I'm fond of listening to old stories. ^^
You know, now, we, the 1st & 2nd year (maybe the 3rd year also), must study at Thủ Đức District. So, everyday I have to get up at a very early time, catch a bus, and then walk to the school (the bus stop's quite far from school)... It usually takes me nearly 1 hour to reach the class, and over 1,5 hours for a school day... It's a waste of time for we cannot read anything in a shaking & densely packed bus  :( It made most of us feel tired at the beginning time but now we are familiar with the route....^^ :)
Just some little stories about me...(I'm usually said that "talkative")...(^___^)
And, excuse me,
hello Sis Hồng Nhung, Sis Thanh Thanh, nice to meet you here, my sempai (tiền bối), which department of DHKHXHNV and when did you graduate from? And Mr Dennis is, perhaps, teaching at the English Department?
Wish all of you a new nice week & a happy new year!

Dear Hong Anh,

Dai Hoc Van Khoa of the old day was a very romantice place.  The  Dai Giang Duong (the main three-story still standing at the middle of the school today) was painted with a brownish yellow color, stypical color of French-style stucco building.  The tree in front of Dai Giang Duong is still there today.

After the front gate, on the left side of the school yard, is a row of one-story little class room.  That place is now a tall building, several-story high.  The other building (in front of Dai Giang Duong today) was not in existence then.  The school yard was very large.
THe cafeteria is still there, but it was called Hoi Quan (or Hoi Quan Van Khoa) with only drink, not food as today.  And it always has a guitar in there.  I think the guitar was put there by one of by friends.  So we caalways has a guitar and sevral bo co tuong to play in hoi quan.

Next to Hoi Quan was two little rooms with steel door.  I heard they were jail rooms in the French time.  Theywere office of The Philosophy Studies Group (my group, nhom nghien cuu tiret hoc, I was its Secretary) and office of The History and Geography Studies Group.  Then further out on the same row were the offices of school.  Some years ago, if my memory is correct, those offices became a guest house for the university. Not sure what they are now).

I played guitar. I started out playing classical guitar, then electrical guitar.  Sometimes we played at Hoi Quan, sometimes other places.  Sometimes I ended up playing drums because it was hard to find drummers.
I loved Van Khoa more than Luat Khoa, so I spent all my time at Van Khoa.  I finished law degree but didn't have time to finish my philosophy degree, then 1975 changed all my schedule :-)

We, NHOM NGHIEN CUU TRIET HOC, like to hang out at "cafe Nguyen Du," the little tables on the via he of Nguyen Du street, under nhung hang me cao voi voi.  Sometimes we hang out in Hoi Quan VAn Khoa, of course.  Or cafe Be Nam, run by Be' Nam's father in Dai Hoc Nong Lam Suc (facing Dai Hoc Van Khoa, on the other side of Dinh Tien Hoang street).  Tons of students from Van KHoa and Duoc KHoa trong cay si with be Nam at cafe Be Nam :-)

Just for you can cac su+ -de^. su+ muo^.i today, I have here the lyric of Chieu Mua Tren Van KHoa, a song that I wrote around 1982 or 1983.  The country in general was in a very bad shape then, so the song had some desparate notes in it.  But it reflected accurately my thinking at the time about the school.  Here to share with you su de and su muoi. (My musical partner, chi Phuong (also in this forum) was the singer for the song.  But since I wrote it with 2 octaves, it tired her out every time she tried to sing it).

Hope you enjoy this little tidbit, Hong Anh.  BTW, you are very analytical and active, Hong Anh.  Thank you, sister.  Please stay that way.

Have a great day!

Hoanh

Dear anh Hoanh:

TrưỠng xưa
      GiỠđây phế hoang
               Lòng ta nát tan  . . .

That was exactly how I felt on my first return to my "truong xua" Van Khoa in 1997 when I helped bring back the Michigan English Proficiency Examination to Vietnam after a long absence since 1975. I then met Dr. Tai, the Vice Rector, whom the exam was initially handed back to. The feeling of seeing "phe hoang" at "truong xua" touched me with sadness.
