Problems installing guest OS

When I try to install a guest OS it doesn't work but I get various problems
for each OS.

Gentoo 2004 I got a segmentation fault. Gentoo 2005.0 it got further but
stopped. Fedora would just tell me that there was no Fedora CD in the
drive. Slackware wouldn't go (don't remember the problem). Knoppix wouldn't
even run. Xandros didn't work. Mandrake would just keep rebooting the
virtual machine.
Is there something I am doing wrong or a setting I could be missing? I am
using VMWare 4.5.2 on Win XP SP2.
