I am having trouble installing oracle server on w2k workstation or w2k
server when they are vm sessions, but it installs just fine when I install
on my laptop.

Now I've used vmware for long enough to know there are very few problems
that are down to vmware, but this one has me stumped. I have vmware 4 on an
XP host and w2k vm images fully patches for both workstation and server.
Run the oracle installer and setup just exits after a mnute or two with no
messages anywhere I can see (but there may be some I guess).

I've taken my vmware and sysprepped/installed to a laptop and then it works
fine

Has anyone else seen this/care to comment. On my w2k workstation laptop,
Oracle installs just fine.

Is this on a P4 machine? There is a bug with the Oracle installer on a P4.
Oracle's site has a patch for it.

The Pentium 4 compatible problem was caused in Oracle 8.1.7 Installation.
You can follow the hyperlink
http://beta.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Oracle/Q_20376433.html.

You will find the answer.

Good luck.

Certain version of Oracle installer have problem with Pentium4 processor.
Isn't it the case that the machine with problem has a Pentium 4 and the laptop
has a different processor?
If so, you'll find solution/workaround at Oracle's site.
