The problem I'm having is that when I start a virtual machine to install a
guest OS, everything goes fine until I have to eject a CD - then the VM
crashes and I get a "monitor error" from VMware. Sometimes, the monitor
error just reports a "signal 11", other times it says that the VM tried to
access a forbidden portion of memory.
When installing XP upgrade as a guest, this happened when I had to swap CDs
to show the install program that I did in fact own an earlier version of
Windows. When installing Mandrake v.10 as a guest, it happened when I went
from disc 1 to disc 2. I have to enable "legacy support" to get the VM to
boot from my CD, so I can't change that setting. I looked through the BIOS
settings for the virtual machine, but there doesn't seem to be anything in
there that would cause the problem.
It does this absolutely every time, so it's quite repeatable. It also means
that I can't even get a guest OS loaded to evaluate VMware. I sent a
support request to VMWare, but since I'm only using an evaluation license,
I'm not holding my breath. I was all set to buy it after playing with
4.5.1 for only a week, but if I can't even load a guest OS under 4.5.2,
well then forget it. I'd really like to get around this problem, since it
seems like such a slick package. With XP running as a guest under SuSE
9.1, I'd pretty much only have to dual-boot into Windows for iTunes and
DirectX games.
