I'd kind of like to get off the Windows treadmill. It's been
fun. But it's too high-maintenence.
I have a few oldish apps that I really cannot replace in Linux
easily. One is N-Track 3.0, another is CoolEdit6 and yet
another is an old MIDI sequencer.
Would VMWare Workstation allow me to run these on a Linux box?
The online marketing materials seem to imply that they would.

Well, WMware emulates a complete PC in software. If these applications don't
expect special hardware on the PC ( e.g. a hardware dongle), they should
run.
However I think, your expectation about VMware is wrong. With VMware you
still have to maintain a complete windows installation (including licence).
The only difference is that this installation just doesn't run on physical
hardware and you can run it without rebooting your PC from Linux to it.
You also might check if wine ( http://www.winehq.org/) is capable to run
your applicatons. That would match your expectation ( not maintaining a
windows installation at all) better.
