VMWare 3.2 on MDK 9.0 - guest hongs during power on

I'm running Mandrake 9.0 with vmware 3.2.0 (build 2230). I have vmware
successfully installed. I can create a configuration for a guest os, but
when I try to power on it hangs. post seems to pass, and it looks like it's
trying to find a boot device, but watching the log file indicates no
activity. the last entry in the log is something to the extend of "vga mode
switch to 3 (3)".

Has any on else run into this, and if so have you been able to correct the
problem?
