I'm running RedHat 7.1 as a base OS with VMware and Win2000 on top of it.
The time in RedHat is correct and works correctly, but in Win2000, the clock
moves very slowly. It easily loses twelve hours in a twenty-four hour
period.

When I start VMware and Win2000, a dialog box appears saying, "Failed to
connect device RTC". How do I get it to connect to /dev/rtc in Linux?

Thanks,

-Dave

Did you load the Vmware tools in the guest? Do you have the "synch
time with host" option checked in the Vmware toolbox program in the
guest? Until you do that the guest time will simply not keep
accurately.

I do NOT work for Vmware.
I'm a customer just like you are.
So please don't blame VMware if you piss me off and I rip you to pieces for it.

As Chuck said, it is normal with W2k if you are not synchronizing time in guest
with host...

... and you cannot use it because of you are using broken kernel. From
discussion with some other RH7.1 user some weeks ago I found that Redhat
delivers kernel which does not have RTC either as module or built into
kernel. So you have to compile your own kernel, which has enabled
Enhandced Realtime Clock support...

I was able to sync the time with the host. I am fairly new to VMware, so I
wasn't aware of the VMware Tools.

Thanks!

Hi, Petr,

This is odd, as I have RH 7.1 installation out of the box. Procinfo
tells me I have rtc. The /dev/rtc is also present. And my VM's
successfully argue over who is going to use the rtc. This leads me to
beleive that rtc is present and functions.....

Maybe I have a respin version ?? Or maybe a different Kernel is in use
to mine?

The details of my RH box are:

Distribution: Red Hat Linux
Operating System: Linux
Distribution Version: Red Hat Linux release 7.1 (Seawolf)

Operating System Version: #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001
Operating System Release: 2.4.2-2
Processor Type: i686
Host Name: localhost.localdomain
User Name: mandingo
X Display Name: :0
System Status: 12:44pm up 4 days, 15:08, 3 users,
load average: 1.35, 1.23, 0.88

Maybe... You can search newsgroups for 'failed to connect device rtc' and
'redhat' and you'll find couple of complainers...

^ maybe?

If someone is counting complainers:

I have the same symtoms with SuSe 7.1 and VmWare 2.0.4.

No wondered it is merely complaint.
Provide details like kernel build, you cease complaining and end up
informing. :)

BTW, I wasn't disputing Petr's post, he is always right. What I meant
by odd is that I have RH 7.1, out of the box and rtc works for VM's,
were as other users have an rtc problem. So as an explanation, there
must be a difference in Kernels..as Petr has pointed out, I have 2.4.2-2

Whats your build?? (uname -a)

For those keeping count, my Linux Mandrake 8.0 box (Based on RH) suffers
the same symptoms. Without synch, many hours lost each day. With
synch, time keeps up, but still receive error booting vmachine.
uname -a returns:
Linux mymachinename 2.4.3-20mdk #1 Sun Apr 15 23:03:10 CEST 2001 i686
