24 years of experience in high level clustered systems management, technical
customer support, and new product sales support using state of the art
hardware and software. Creative solutions and excellent problem solving
skills in a team environment.
o First Health Group Corp 1993-2004
Managed production VMS Alpha and VAX clusters, standalone systems, and
development environments. VMS Versions 5.5 to 7.3-1 Supported hardware,
storage, software, DECnet and TCPIP, layered products, patches and upgrades,
printers, terminal servers, security, and Y2K issues across 3 data centers.
Monitored performance and proactively prevented performance issues, assuring
acceptable performance levels. Troubleshoot problems as they occur while
keeping users informed of status. Supported other departments use of these
systems. These systems supported INGRES, ORACLE, SAS, and custom
applications.
UNIX support on DEC/Alpha, HP-UX, IBM AIX and LINUX servers supporting
database, middleware, web, and other environments, including installing and
setting up new hardware and storage.
Managed storage environment that grew from 100 GB to 100 TB over a 10 year
period. This environment included internal storage, direct attached SCSI
RAID controllers, HSC/HSJ, and several large Storageworks SANs. Leader in
the implemention of different RAID technologies, and choosing the
appropriate solution based on the need. Trained new team members in storage
technology.
Moved data center a after corporate acquisition, and integrated their
systems into our structure. Reconfigured these systems to reduce ongoing
hardware and software maintenance costs.
Worked with production support, application development, DBA, and other
internal groups in providing for their systems and storage needs, and in how
to perform or automate various business functions.
24x7 oncall support of these environments. Troubleshooting of critical
situations to minimize downtime. Documentation of systems environment. Data
protection and disaster recovery. Redesigned system backup procedures to be
more robust and easier to manage.
Developed several vendor contacts for products that became critical to our
business.
o Chicago Title 1992-1993
Supported production VMS clusters and storage. Installed new software
versions. Handles operational problems, both hardware and software.
o Independent Consultant 1992
Provided VMS cluster expertise to a food product manufacturer.
o Digital Equipment Corporation (now part of HP) 1980-1991
Managed a demonstration center and their associated storage devices in a
clustered and networked environment. Maintained VMS operating system and
layered products on these systems. Managed terminal servers, remote
printers, local area network, communications, and audio/video equipment
supporting the demonstration center. Planned for future hardware and
software needs. Installed new hardware and software. Assisted third party
vendors in setting up their software environments in the demonstration
center. Verified that demonstrations were working properly prior to customer
visits.
Suggested changes that improved the quality of one product and decreased its
maintenance cost. Suggested packaging changes for documentation to reduce
costs, while minimizing environmental impact.
Managed an application development system, an internal training center, and
a disaster recovery service center. Coordinated three facility moves for
these systems.
Provided technical telephone support to internal and external customers.
Supported RT-11, RSX-11M, and VMS operating systems, along with their
layered products. Provided support to field service in resolving problems
and installing new systems. Heavy hardware background. Managed several
internal systems used in these activities.
Developed and taught internal training classes and seminars.
Provided critical consulting and problem resolution to customers. Filled in
at the Telephone Support Center, handling customer calls on networking
products.
Specified needs to product engineering for new software products. Field
tested numerous new products and versions.
