Good Evening Everyone,

My name is Steve (aka Stevester). I am try to run vmsbackup on
Centos 5.3. I am using VMWare Server 2.0.1. When i run the script with
this command: ./backup_vmware3.12a.sh

I get this output:

$VMVERSION = 2
$GUESTPATH = /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines
please supply an argument

Also in the documentation, its says once you create user vmsbackup on
VMWare Server 2.0.1, set the login shell to /bin/false? How do you
perform this when one of those shells is not listed.

Thanks
Steve

Apparently its the space in the GUESTPATH: /var/lib/vmware/Virtual
Machines. The space in between Virtual Machines is causing the issue.
Can someone issue a fix?

Thanks
Stevester

Hello Steve, in order to make the script work you need to supply some
options/parameters, for example:

to get the help
backup_vmware3.12a.sh -?

to enable all registered virtual machines
backup_vmware3.12a.sh -ea

to perform an "hot" backup of all enabled virtual machines using tar
archiver
backup_vmware3.12a.sh -s hot -f tar

to perform the same but with debugging information
backup_vmware3.12a.sh -D -s hot -f tar

to list actually enabled VMs

backup_vmware3.12a.sh -l

For more details please consult the INSTALL.TXT and README.TXT files
included in the zip file

Have a nice weekend and a nice backup! ;-)

I did that and still get the error. I think its related to the spaces in the path to the VMs

This is quite strange, the issues with spaces have been fixed, so they
shouldn't be bothering you now.

Could you please give me more details on your current setup?

- exact command line parameter you are using when getting the error
- try to run the script again using the same parameters BUT adding -D
in front of it
in this case please send me also the output of the script
- VMware version you're using (I see 2 but is it 2.0.1 or 2.0.0 ?)
- any other eventual peculiarities of your configuration
- the log file created by the script (should be in /tmp )

Thank you

Michele

Sorry: Actually the error is different when i use an argument: If i run ./backup_vmware3.12a.sh -s hot -f gzip, the error i get is this

[root@vscan vmscripts]# ./backup_vmware3.12a.sh -s hot -f gzip
$VMVERSION = 2
$GUESTPATH = /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines
Debug mode enabled
2009-08-01 [ 3:33:48] -> SCRIPT STARTED
2009-08-01 [ 3:33:48] -> The check of the directories has been completed without errors
2009-08-01 [ 3:33:48] -> Sanity checks completed without errors, starting backup procedure
2009-08-01 [ 3:33:48] -> the following VMs will be backed up
Virtual Machines
$GUESTCONF = [standard]/Virtual Machines
$GUESTVMX =
2009-08-01 [ 3:33:48] -> Backup of the VM Virtual Machines started
the specified VM is invalid

It would seem as if there's a ".backup" file into your repository's
root directory.
I mean this:

/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/.backup

Could you please do the following things (in the order)?

1) post the output of ./backup_vmware3.12a.sh -l
2) manually remove the file
/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/.backup
3) enable one VM of your choice
4) run the script again with the "-D -s hot -f gzip" parameters
and post the output

Thank you,

Michele
