Yard Sampling and Cleanup efforts begin in the Tacoma Smelter Plume

Ecology's Residential Yard Sampling and Cleanup Program (Yard Program) has started soil sampling in north Tacoma and on southern Vashon-Maury Island. We are sampling residential yards for arsenic and lead contamination from the former Tacoma Asarco smelter.

Sampling Schedule

Ecology plans to sample thousands of properties within the Yard Program service area, working neighborhood by neighborhood. In August, Tacoma Pierce County Health Department started contacting homeowners and collecting samples in west Tacoma. On Vashon-Maury Island, Ecology sent letters to offer soil sampling to 350 homeowners on the Maury side. This week, we began knocking on doors of homes that have not responded to our letters and we will begin sampling next week.

Sign up now! If your property is within the Yard Program service area, you can sign up for soil sampling now by filling out a sampling access form.

Cleanup Schedule

This summer, Ecology contacted its first group of homeowners eligible for cleanup inside the Superfund area. Cleanup started this month on four properties leftover from the Environmental Protection Agencies cleanup in the Superfund area.

On Vashon-Maury Island, Ecology will begin contacting the first group of homeowners eligible for cleanup this winter.
