Thanks to Jeanie for her comments on the VMCA Institute and Academy
for 2009. We had a new location, new Institute Director, and a lot of
new programming ideas. How did you feel about the sessions? The hotel?
The food? The new evaluation procedure? Your input is valuable!

This is from Renee Anderson:

Liz, thanks for your hard work on the Google site…I’m still trying to
figure it out (my responses keep bouncing back) but wanted you to know
that the Academy training was great. The venue, the education
program, the food, and especially the camaraderie. I was pleased to
see so many clerks in attendance, in spite of difficult economic
times.

This was my third year, and by far the best. The courses were
interesting, well run, and best of all, relevant. I was particularly
pleased with Dr. Dyer, although Dr. Faulcon and Mr. Cummings were also
great. And Mr. Hollowell is always entertaining and informative.

I've almost completed my "letter to the elected body" (formerly known as
IPDP), and believe it is a much better process than the old method. I
don't know how anyone could put all that information into a 500 word
letter; there's so much to say.

Regarding the hotel, my reviews are mixed. The room (especially the
bathroom) was much smaller than that at the Holiday Inn, and
housekeeping did not supply any washcloths, only one bar of soap for the
week, and did not bring us a remote that worked after asking for it on
the first evening. However, when I left my camcorder in the Holiday Inn
room last year and called to retrieve it two hours later (note that no
one checked into the room after me), they said they couldn't find it
despite my telling them exactly where it was located. The room manager
said he would call me in a day or two to let me know if it was found.
After a week, I called him and of course it was not turned in.
Surprise, surprise. So, the moral of my story is, a hotel room is a
hotel room. It had a bed, a nice sunrise, I'm happy.

As for the hotel food, I thought it was very good. I only had lunch
twice (Italian day and Thursday's awards luncheon), but they were both
very tasty. I'm an oatmeal fan so I had breakfast at various locations
along the strip, electing to pass on the bagels and muffins.

In a nutshell, I was very pleased and the improvements were very
noticeable. The new organizers have their acts together.

If Council will allow, and if I have enough points to head toward a MMC,
I'll be there next year, anxiously anticipating another week of
learning.

I particularly liked the food and it likes me a lot and has elected to
stay on as an additional three pounds! Seriously though, the classes
were good this year - very informative and pertinent to what we do.

Thanks for reminding me I still have to do my evaluation.

The essay should be 1,500 words. The link above is an explanation of
the new assessment tool that was posted on the VMCA website.

Renee,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I too thought the opportunity for
networking was a great benefit for the clerks since the new assessment tool
was implemented prior to the Institute/Academy sessions. Mike Dugan and
Daliana efforts really paid off.

Julie,

Thank you for the positive feedback. I am so thankful that the hardwork of
Mike Dugan and Daliana were noticeable.

We discussed briefly the possibility of inquiring regarding other hotel
accommodations. We will discuss this option further. We will also be
reviewing the feedback with the Sheraton.
