Dear fellow vergers,

Our new thurible has developed a shiny but nasty-looking black patina in its inner dome and on its lower chain. Suggestions for cleaning it? (Our religious supply store says to send it back to the manufacturer for cleaning. Expensive, and impractical.)

Bob,
Use acetone to soak and clean the accumulated oils and resin from your Thurible. It may take some time and a bit of scrubbing with a toothbrush or soft brillo pad. After it is cleaned in that way you can polish it up to look like new.
Blessings,
Andrew

Are we sure this doesn’t damage the brass seal (or whatever is keeping the brass shiny without having to polish it) . . . I’d love to clean our thurible too, but not at the risk of my life if I damage the shine!

Anything in the line of a clear coating (lacquer, etc.) would be affected by any chemical cleaner.  But the heat should affect it as well.  On the other hand, if it has be “Hamilton washed” which actually puts a very fine layer of gold on it, commercially available chemical cleaners should not affect it.  I would be surprised if anyone put lacquer on a thurible and even more surprised if it held up to the heat.  But I won’t deny that it is possible – I have seen dumber things done (with the best of intentions).

Spray on a liberal amount of Easy Off oven cleaner, let set for a few minutes & wipe down with a soft disposable cloth.  Repeat, if necessary and follow with a thorough washing with dish soap & hot water. Dry thoroughly.

Here are some interesting notes . . . including references to lacquered thuribles. This would not have been my choice, but was a memorial gift. I wouldn’t mind having to polish the thurible, but hesitate to be the one to remove the lacquer, especially since I really don’t know what is under it. It is unaffected by heat.

A thurible should not be lacquered.  The heat will burn the lacquer off.

Regard,
Trevor Floyd
