First of all, a most blessed Christmastide to each of you.  I trust you each are taking time to rest after the busy but welcome week.

The most recent addition to our chancel has been an aumbry, which was installed over the summer.  While it is a most welcome addition, we are struggling with what to use as a sanctuary light for it.

Our church is a beautiful carpenter gothic that is 135 years old.  To a flame, it's essentially a great big tender bundle, so there is a lot of resistance to using an open flame, particularly when no one is around.

We have tried battery powered flameless candles, but they never seem to last more than a week,  At the moment, we are using an oil candle, though we do light and extinguish it, which is not what we want to do.  We are hoping to run electricity to it soon, which would solve a lot of problems.

I just thought I'd ask if anyone has any different ideas I might propose?

We use an electric low-wattage candle bulb in a red glass holder for the same reasons, although strangely enough we always have votive candles burning.

You can buy 7 day candles and holders from Almy that are contained do there is little danger of fire.  You only need change it once a week which we do with the Sat. Altar guild crew.

Bryan,

We use a candle and suspended holder.  The candle goes inside a glass that is attached to the holder; the holder is anchored to the wall and extends out into the altar/chancel area.  The candle is thus suspended and away from the wall by 2’ or so.  We get a little smoke on the plate at the top of the of the structure, but otherwise we keep the candle lit at all times and have had no problem.

The type of candle and holder that Rich describes is what we use at our church. Our aumbry is built into the wall with doors that are flush with the wall around it. Above the aumbry (most people use a step ladder to reach it) is a small shelf built of matching wood. The candle is self contained as purchased but we set it on a small fire proof, ceramic disc (basically like a coaster for drink cups). We have a red transparent cover that goes over the candle, full length, but rests on the disc below.

Even since Oklahoma started having earthquakes we have never had a problem with it. And it is high enough that only deliberate action will reach it.

Respectfully,

My first parish I was verger at, St. Timothy's in Henderson we had an
electric light. Cheesy as all get out, but it worked. Every other parish I
have seen the tall glass week long votives that work just fine without
problems, even here in earthquake country.

Almy also sells a refillable liquid wax canister for their sanctuary lights.
If you decide to go with 7 or 8 day wax candle inserts, Vermont Church
Supply has them in plastic containers (instead of glass) that are about half
the cost of the glass ones.

Here at Christ Church Towanda, we also use a large votive candle, in red glass, suspended from a chain attached to the wall. Attached is a picture of the altar area with the candle visible. We also have the Altar Guild take care of changing the candle each week.Inline image 1

I also wish everyone a spiritual and fulfilling Christmas season. My own church is 190 years old and there's never been a worry about the Sanctuary light setting fire to the building. The Altar Guild would be aghast at using anything but real candles. We tried oil candles for about a year but had too many problems. We returned to wax and are much happier. As for the 7-day candle, we also have a hanger that extends out from the wall in our chancel much like yours. Almy's candles come in a tall cylindrical plastic unit which is then placed in the taller glass container which is placed in the suspended hanger. Never any problems (and we even had a 4.6 earthquake).

HI,

At St. John's we use the following 7 day Sanctuary candles and holders in the church and the chapel.  We tend to set fires with the thurible rather than the candles.

I whish you Peace and a Glorious New Year,
