This may have been answered before, but I just do not recall.  A priest friend of mine may be pulling me back into service and to assist in creating an acolyte program at his parish.  The parish used to be high church and they have not only a Verge but also a Beadle Pole.  Other than length, what is the difference?  Is one used on different occasions, etc. etc.

Scott....

Many churches use a beadle pole regularly, and many reserve its use for special occasions.  At St. Davids, a beadle pole would be way too much for our liturgical style.  It's really a matter of local custom. I've never used a pole, but I suspect that it might be more cumbersome to deal with in the performance of our duties.  It would, however, make a more formidable weapon.....

Scott:

The Beadle Pole is used by the Beadle, who can also be a Verger.

The Beadle leads the procession and clears the way, hence the longer Staff of Office.  A Beadle Pole is carried by lifting it off the floor and resting it on the shoulder;  when the need is to clear a path then lifting the bottom up and out, and carefully moving it left to right WILL clear the way.

A Virge is use to point the way and lead a procession or people to and fro.  A Virge is lifted off the shoulder or arm and pointed out at about a 45 degree angle in front as you lead the way.

I have a guy here who made my verge custom for me. He is always
looking for new business and if you are interested, I can ask him to
make one for you. I don't remember what it cost but mine is really
light and in two pieces with an inter-changeable topper. If you want
to know more just let me know and I will get some pictures of it. I
plan on making it to the conference so I may even be able to deliver
if anybody is interested in buying one from him.

I would be very interested in both a verge and a beadle for my parish.

I could not find a way to post the pictures directly into v-list so I
put them on my photobucket account. Here is the link to get to them.

If it doesn't come up as a hyperlink just copy and past into your
browser bar and you'll be able to find them. I asked Ed, the guy who
made them for me about how much it would cost to make some more and he
told me that it really depends on the details and what type of wood
you want used. He told me that it should be somewhere between $100
and $200 for a verge. I haven't given him any specs on a beadle pole
but I would imagine that it's going to be a bit more than that. I
hope you all like what you see.

I'd like to express my interest in a Beadle, if you can get a firm
price.

Also for those who are not able to join us, you can watch the Grand procession of Acolytes and Vergers at the National Acolyte Festival on Saturday at 10am Eastern by going to the National Cathedral’s website and clicking on the link.  You can also watch the Cathedral’s Sunday morning Eucharist at 11:15am on the same website.  The Vergers at the conference will be processing at both the Acolyte Festival and the Sunday Morning Eucharist.  The Website is  www.nationalcathedral.org
