I just wanted to let everyone know that Monotype, the creators of FontExplorer X, told me via a tweet that they definitely have Affinity products on their radar for integration. This is really good news, however as with all software development they have not been able to provide a timeline. I recommend that everyone who wants font activation and enjoy using FontExplorer X as much as I have over the past 10 years, should contact them and let them know there is a huge community wanting auto font activation. It's such a pain to do it manually. See below.

After being a long time user of FontExplorer (since V1) I recently gave up on it, it really isn't that great. I tested pretty much all the options and eventually settled on RightFont, this is currently working well for me, not perfect of course but it's doing a good job and the auto activation works well with all Affinity apps. It actually works better with Adobe apps than FontExplorer and it's (usually out of date) activation plugins.

Yes, it was really the auto activation aspect. Also, after manually activating a font I would always have to relaunch the app I was working in, whether that be Affinity or Adobe for the new font to be available. Right Font is much better in this regard.

Hi DesignSurge,
You have to enable (add) the interception of font requests for Affinity apps in the Font Requests tab, in Font Explorer Preferences (see attached screenshot below). Then every time a document uses a non-activated font it should display the Font Request dialog shown below as well.

I am aware of the need to use the interception of font requests setting, it may have been related to my own system but I still found it to be generally unreliable. This wasn't just an Affinity issue, integration with Adobe never seemed to be as good as expected either. Right Font is working out for me at present so I am happy with the change.

I have macOS Ventura and ever since installing it, some hidden apps quit after sleep. I keep several apps open and hide them. Well when the laptop goes to sleep, it quits some of them including Apple's own Reminders app. The other apps that it does this too are Parcel, Paprika, and Font Explorer X Pro. But only these for me. I have several others I keep open and hide and it doesn't quit them.

I use FontExplorer X Pro, and routinely launch it first thing in the morning, then hide it to run throughout my workday. Since I upgraded to Ventura, I've noticed that FontExplorer X Pro quits without giving any notification. It simply quietly quits. I have not put my iMac to sleep.

Just upgraded my mac to the Mac Studio on Ventura and I'm experiencing the same thing with FontExplorer X Pro. A temporary workaround is to go to settings and activate "Confirm Quit". That way it doesn't silently quit on you but will pop up saying "do you really want to quit".

I know that question marks problem, as well. While it is related to FontExplorer X Pro, it means your font cache has become corrupted. This happens when you run Font Explorer X Pro simultaneously with Adobe CC apps. The remedy is to delete your font cache and reboot, which can be done via command line with the Terminal app. Details here:

I think the unannounced quitting problem with hidden apps is something different. It has only begun happening for me in Ventura. The corrupted font cache has been happening to me through last three or four macOS versions.

Anyone know how to solve a font activation problem I am having with FontExplorer 4.2? I am on a new mac with new fonts, I am using Maverick with Adobe CS6. With my new mac I bought the latest version of FontExporer Pro X 4.2. This program is having trouble with font activation in all my Adoble suite apps including Indesign. Here is what I am seeing:

I'm going to lock this old discussion. Almost all references to old versions of third party products which should be directed to the developers of such products. If you're having InDesign problems, please start a new thread. Thanks.

Yes, I have asked FontExplorer, but their customer service is terrible. I have waited over a week for a response to many emails and still haven't heard back. I was hoping someone from this community came across the same issue and their own solution around it since FontExplorer isn't helping.

Anyway it seems like font explorer is working on the problem. Meanwhile I am using FontBook, not very good, but at least it works. I don't have to reactivate all my fonts every time I open an INDD file.

Mavericks has been available for over a year. If the company that makes Font Explorer hasn't fixed the problem by now, you need to seriously consider another product. (And, no, it's NOT Apple's fault.)

I have the same issue, every time I restart my computer all the fonts activated in FontExplorer become invisible to InDesign. The only thing I've been able to do about it is deactivate the fonts and then activate them again and that solves it. But I agree, they really need to address this issue.

I am having the same issues, I didn't have any issues with Cs5, or 6 just updated to creative cloud and now my fonts are not activating. Its very possible thats its something to do with font explorer and not adobe but I'm sorry that some people on this post are not being very helpful. Suggesting that someone switch to another program is not helpful, I'm sure that is something to consider as a last resort but we want to try to find a solution first. Thanks to those that are actually trying to help.

I just wanted to let you know that I have the same issue with FontExplorer 5 (and before with FontExplorer 4 on Yosemite) and that it's been about 3 weeks of email corresponding support with them - with no success from their part to reproduce the problem.

upgraded to el capitan and thought that was the problem but seems not as first post is from way back in may. if someone has come close to a solution i would, along with what looks like a lot of others, be grateful

I agree with you that PDF has changed everything work-flow wise. In my case I too have a large font collection and I just want a manager that handles whatever I have. At my day job I use AdobeGarramond Pro; Adobe HelveticaNeue and Avant Garde, all of which are PS.

One paid version that I think looks good is RightFont 5. Inexpensive ($35), auto activates without plugins, does all font formats, and has dark mode. Probably my next choice when I finally leave Suitcase.

ok, Basic version

Apple Support How to install and remove fonts on your MacYour Mac comes with many built-in fonts, and you can download and install more from Apple and other sources. If you don't want a font to appear in your apps, you can disable or remove it.

Kerry, Thanks!
Finally someone willing to just proclaim what they like working with... i've been having issues with the other paid management software and for the past week, searching for someone to just say, "this is your best choice"... all other reviews/reviewers seem afraid to have an opinion. I appreciate straightforward talk backed by experience.
My research has ended, I'm upgrading to X Pro 3 right now... and you now have a new reader. Keep shedding the light on people creating great products that make our lives as professionals, easier.

Thanks Kerry. I just bought a new Mac and am tired of all my apps taking a day and a half to start up or crash because of the whole font caching.

I used to use ATM "back in the day" (OS 6 or 7?), but since X I wasn't happy with any offering and have just been dealing with it.

You review is SO positive, I'm just going to go with FontExplorer.

I know there are a couple of high-end apps (Fontographer, FontLab). Are there any basic smaller apps to simply edit the font info without editing character and other tables? I don't want to edit the actual font data specifically, merely the titles and naming structure I believe.

Notes:
Running Mac OS 10.7, but can boot to 10.6 or 10.8 if needed. I am not absolutely looking for freeware. If there's a paid app to do this, I'm fine with that. If someone wants to outline steps in FontLab or Fontographer, I'm all ears.

RoboFont is a great software (mac only) for font editing on so many levels. It also does what you're looking for: allows you to open individual files and edit their font info and then resave in whatever format you need. I recently had to do exactly what you're asking with my copy of Gotham which was installing as individual files and not as a family.
