Hi all,
I'm writing to say that I am stepping away from the VIVO community.
On October 12th, 2021, I had my second ruptured intestine. Once again, I was
rushed by ambulance for emergency surgery to spend a week in the hospital under
the extraordinary care of the nurses, doctors, and staff of the University of
Florida Health System. I am fully recovered after four months. At my age, I
would like to spend what time I have left, whether it be 1, 10, or 30 years with
my family and my local community. I hope you can understand.
The VIVO Project has been a highlight of my working life. I have met so many wonderful
people since 2009 who did so much wonderful work to bring open software,
enabling an open scholarly record, to the world.
The genius of an open, extensible ontology, using Resource Description
Framework, for open, FAIR representation of data, in an
open and extensible software stack is a truly incredible combination.
The excitement the project has generated across the world has been gratifying.
The fun, camaraderie, and pure joy that come from doing important, creative
teamwork is not easily matched.
I wish you all the best as you continue the VIVO adventure.
Go VIVO!
Mike Conlon
Emeritus VIVO Project Director
Emeritus Professor, University of Florida
Hi Mike,
At first: Good to hear that you have recovered! And I bet everyone understands your decision to shift your focus to your friends and family.
However, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for about 10 years of exchanges on VIVO, research information, software, open source governance, ontologies, the subtle but crucial semantic differences of seemingly trivial concepts in different languages (grants and projects!), the help in building up a basic knowledge of American football (Go Gators!) and the many, many conversations about whatever we found interesting at the time. You were one of the first people in the VIVO community I came in contact with and certainly your competent and helpful nature was a reason why I am still here. We at TIB owe you a lot.
Thank you very much, all the best, and hopefully see you again!
Christian

Hi Mike,
Happy to hear you are fully recovered after this time.
Apart from what Christian has said and with which I totally agree, I would like to add that it has been an honor and a pleasure to meet you and to have been able to work with you.
I wish you the best for you and yours.
Sincerely,
Anna.
