As the summer unfolds, the VIVO community continues to push forward with new initiatives, collaborative developments and exciting opportunities to shape the future of research information systems. Here’s a roundup of news and highlights from

June and July.

Highlights

 

VIVO Development Opportunity: Call for Interest

 

We're seeking expressions of interest from developers and community members

to participate in an upcoming VIVO paid development project to accelerate our roadmap, enabling VIVO to be easily hosted and customized for common research institutions’ use cases. If you're interested in contributing, please read the opportunity announcement and submit your interest by August 15. Work is expected to begin in September or October.

 

Registration Open for the 7th VIVO Workshop (German)

 

Registration is now open for the 7th (German) VIVO Workshop, taking place on September 24–25, 2025, at TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology in Hannover, Germany. Register and find more details here.

Updates from the Community

 

AI and Ontology-Based Knowledge Architecture

 

CINECA presented its AI-related developments using linked data and ontologies. Highlights included integration with UNIFIND (their VIVO Module) data and internal AI projects, showcasing a highly interconnected and machine-readable knowledge base ideal for future applications.

 

Membership and Leadership Updates

 

A proposal to extend leadership roles to Bronze-level members in good standing has been discussed, considering the lower renewal year. A motion to grant 1-year Leadership Group extensions for eligible Bronze members was raised and seconded, with a vote scheduled for the next meeting.

 

Wiki Cleanup and Ownership

 

The Leadership Group discussed maintaining a well-curated VIVO wiki. Admin rights were reassigned to members who will begin archiving outdated content and reviewing existing privileges to improve structure and clarity.

 

Exploring Future Funding and Tools

 

A discussion on potential funders like Arcadia Fund was initiated, focusing

on projects aligned with Open Access and Open Science. Ideas also surfaced around future service tools, grant proposal support and building open source community infrastructure.

 

Ontology Updates

 

There is ongoing work on the improvement of the representation of scientific instruments in the VIVO Ontology. Some changes to this part of the ontology are in preparation, but these modifications will not affect the next VIVO release 1.16.

 

 

Upcoming Events

EFS Forum 2025

 

VIVO is a sponsor of the virtual

Expert Finder Systems Forum on September 16–18. VIVO will contribute to a panel discussion on research information systems and open infrastructure.

 



7th German VIVO Workshop

 

Mark your calendars and register for the 7th (German) VIVO Workshop, taking place on 24–25 September 2025 at TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology in Hannover, Germany.

 

Join fellow implementers, developers and researchers for two days of learning, networking, and collaboration.
