La historia de ‘In the Heights’ presenta a un grupo muy variado de personas con un aspecto en común: todas viven en el barrio de Washington Heights, en la parte norte de Manhattan. Usnavi es el dueño de una pequeña bodega. A veces cuida de una mujer mayor cubana, pero por lo que se le conoce principalmente es por ligar con una de las chicas que trabaja en el salón de belleza del barrio. Usnavi sueña con ganar la lotería e irse muy lejos de allí, en concreto, a la República Dominicana. Nina, una de las amigas de la infancia de Usnavi, ha vuelto al barrio después de pasar un año en la universidad. A pesar de la alegría del reencuentro con sus padres, esta no se mantendrá porque Nina le contará que ha dejado la universidad. Eso hará que su padre se sienta culpable por no poder pagarla tras la pérdida de la beca académica.
