Has anyone worked with Madwifi? I am using ar9285 (Atheros) for
Madwifi drivers. I checked out the drivers through svn and then
compiled and installed it. Everything went fine.
I then did `modprobe ath_pci` and then blacklisted ath9k as indicated
by several wikis. After this, I gave the system a reboot. But the ath
module still didn't load.

When I do ' wlanconfig ath create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta', it
gives an error saying - "wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device". I known
this is a common error and but none of the fixes I have researched
through fixed my problem.

lsmod |grep ath gives :
ath9k 86167 0
ath9k_common 5294 1 ath9k
ath9k_hw 283034 2 ath9k,ath9k_common
ath 9505 2 ath9k,ath9k_hw
mac80211 229063 2 ath9k,ath9k_common
cfg80211 134981 4 ath9k,ath9k_common,ath,mac80211

Even dmseg gives no sign of `wifi` or `wifi0`.

Can anyone suggest a solution or a workaround?

if you have blacklisted ath9k , why does it show up again ?
did you try "insmod <module>" on the module you compiled?,

try manually removing the default module and inserting the one you compiled.

I did even insmod but even that didn't help.

I in fact once blacklisted all wlan related modules did everything
from the scratch and I still couldn't understand why it says `ioctl :
No such device`

it generally says that if the firmware is missing.

Okay, so how shall I install the ath firmware?

But, if I am not wrong, shouldn't the driver installation handle the
firmware installation too?

not sure it does everytime. Check "dmesg" to see what is going wrong !

`dmesg` mentions only about ath9k. And the response of `dmesg` is as
usual gibberish to me.

I have given up the configuration using madwifi after struggling with
it for the last 3 days. I built the compat-wireless and installed it.
But the issue with Madwifi remains. If you or anyone finds a solution
to this problem, please attach it to this list.
