Did you use the scripts under examples/local or did you build your own? You may be missing this command line option on vttablet: -service_map 'grpc-queryservice,grpc-tabletmanager,grpc-updatestream'.

Or. the host names/ips that vtctld is trying to connect to are incorrect.
