SQUAMISH NATURE LEARNERS
We Love Átl'ka7tsem (Howe Sound)
arts & crafts - mixed media

A lot of the pieces in this series are inspired by trying to capture and reimage the place where the urban and the natural worlds meet -- merging them.
Some of the best effects are purely accidental! Sometimes a can will drip or spray weird and it will create an effect that flows with something else, or the paint under a stencil wasn’t dry enough and it peels away revealing other coloured layers underneath. Going with ‘mistakes’ has helped me make some of my favorite pieces.

My last project, “Changing Squamish” documented the changing man-made landscape in Squamish, as well as the increasing privatization and enclosures of public land that are a direct result of capitalism and colonial ideologies. This project commented on social and political issues and created really good conversations and more importantly, I was told that it pushed people to self-reflect on the parts that we all play in upholding current power structures. This collection, slightly different, aims to represent the humanity in people that I’ve encountered, some who were complete strangers who I've had very interesting and meaningful conversations with. This series also aims to reflect on aspects of our culture or moments in life that I found beautiful or moving in some way.

"We Love Átl'ka7tsem (Howe Sound)" was created by the students at Squamish Nature Learners to honor Átl'ka7tsem.
Collaborating with Elder Carver Art Harry, the students crafted these pieces to show their appreciation for Howe Sound and to acknowledge the unceded territory of the Squamish Nation.
The art pieces celebrate Átl'ka7tsem that is central to our community.
Squamish Nature Learners is a K-7 forest school.
The central themes of the school include land based learning, community, and learning from Squamish Nation Elders (Sisolia, See Appl-tun, and Tsawaysia)
