LAYLA DAIRE DAUD, 'The Forms of Illusion', experimental ceramics

This exhibit is a tribute to the places I have lived. I’ve lived along the rivers’ shore, where the sea meets sky, where land and valleys become one.

I have not lived here long, but long enough to see the value and beauty of what Squamish offers.

‘Down by the Valley’ is where Squamish is, it is all that lives and plays, it is where inspiration lies, it is this place I now call home.

To paint what is present in our environment is my acknowledgement of its existence, of its value and beauty.

This is what, inspires me and brings me joy. I hope the images speak for themselves.

-- Una Yvonne Polenova

I try to have a multisensory relationship with the material. Possibilities are always at the forefront of my work.

I like to have ideas to work with but I prefer that they take their own course while they take shape. My work is born spontaneously with a movable script, and I only present myself as it’s guide.

The themes are the power of nature in contrast to what the human being can create which is why my figures are dressed in layers that can be read as skin or cloth, sometimes as lichen, other fluorescence or as fungi that will colonize a space and then disappear and re-emerge. There is a juxtaposition of the fabric. The look of matter (the earth itself, the constant) and the artificial that accompanies it. The accidental is intertwined in a work that tries to approach the nature of the human gaze in the most expressionist and gestural way. I am interested in the fragility that coexists on that threshold of artifice and reality.
