Vaalia

This exhibit titled ‘Soft Focus’ plays with depth of field and different perspectives of the way we see things.

This series focuses mostly on nature subjects and the inspiration was from spending time outdoors in the mountains, going on walks with my family, and enjoying the nature that surrounds us.

Something that most people don’t know about my process is that I use multiple mediums and techniques to achieve the bokeh background effect (bokeh is defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light"). One of them is using an airbrush to get the smooth blurry backgrounds. I use different mediums for my foregrounds including acrylic paint, gouache, oil paint and even water colours. I also mostly paint with a palette knife.

Vaalia is a Finnish word meaning “to cherish, nurture, treasure or uphold”, and pays homage to my first felting teacher, who is Finnish, as well as my favourite wool to use in making vessels, which comes from the Finnish Landrace sheep. The work you see in Vaalia is the result of the last four years of evolution in my creative and technical abilities as a fibre artist: from first experiments in creating interesting surface effects, to recent works that are more ambitious in scale and form, and include elements such as hand-painted silk, found wood, and stones. All the works reflect my desire to create pieces that celebrate organic shapes and textures, and evoke a sense of wonder and delight.   -- VANESSA SPARROW
