I'm having zero success in getting my data from an Excel spreadsheet
into ViSta - no matter what I try. Yes, I launched ViSta first and
then used its menu bar to launch Excel and then my data file. Yes,
the first row contains the column names (no spaces, etc.), the second
row contains "numeric" or "category." Then the directions say to
"select" the data you want to move into ViSta...how? By
highlighting? Or do they mean just use the options under the ViSta
menu item in Excel? Ambiguity reigns! Tried both - neither worked.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

You might want to check the list for answers to this question. The short
answer however is that this link does not work well. I saw Forrest
running it in his computer long time ago but I could not every do it myself.
Importing data as a .txt file is less elegant but it works most of the time.

Thanks, guys, but I just tried importing my data as a .txt file and I
keep getting an error message that the file name is too long. It
appears as though ViSta treats the *path name* as the file name? I've
cut the *file name* to eight (8) characters, and the file extrension
is .txt ... Now what do I try?

Wayne, I can try importing your data by myself. If you want, send me the data (or a piece of them). Best, Ruben.

Thanks, Rubén, but even if you succeed, I will still not be able to
get data into ViSta. Is it just me, or do others have this much
trouble with something that should be as easy as 1-2-3. :-)

I'm using Spotfire for now and will try Tableau next, but I was really
hoping to see what ViSta has to offer... :-(

The message you get about the too long file name...Just move the file
to your desktop and then try to open it.

PD: What is the price of Spotfire? I was having a look to it the other
day and I could not find it

I see the interest of spotfire but also the price : 79$ per month for
the most basic module which excludes even Anova
http://spotfire.tibco.com/Webstore/Spotfire-Express-Details.aspx

even SPSS is cheaper or has a better relation cost/result.

I don't see what you could do with Tableau if you use ViSta. I would
look more to StatGraphics if I want to compare with Vista.

Another competitor is Spad
http://eng.spadsoft.com/content/blogcategory/15/34/
which has a very nice interface which resembles the Vista GUI.

What do you look for in a programme ?

Thanks, Pedro, I will try moving my data file to my Desktop and see
what happens. {sheesh!}

Yes, Frank, Spotfire is very expensive - they quoted me for a three-
year license only (no annual licens) at $10K + maintenance fee!
Fortunately, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is a part of the University
of Texas so I got the academic discount: $3K for three years + annual
maintenance fee. I licensed Tableau *before* I learned about ViSta
[ :-( ], and was hoping to use ViSta and drop Tableau...I'll check
out Spad.

What I look for in *any* program is
1) Easy to learn
2) Easy to use
3) Versatile, in features and functions
4) Reasonable price

I don't have StatGraphics but do have Statistica - perhaps I'll try
that, too. :-)

Really Frank? you can explain me how you import you data and work the data in vista.
I tell my problem: I have a excel file that have my data (280 observations in one column...because I want a bootstrap) but in vista I can´t use this data.
And how I transform this data in txt file...and how I use in vista?

Thank you for you attention and time.

This file is correctly set for being imported into ViSta.

Good luck with your analysis,

I am having the same problem uploading my data from Excel.

After reading this thread I have converted the data to txt file (see attachment) but still no luck... I open Vista, click "import data" and select the file ... but then nothing happens.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am having EXACTLY this problem... I have tried thousands of ways to get my excel file to Vista but no success! Did you manage to find a solution to this problem?

HI Victoria,

I made a few changes in your file and now it works. The changes are: 1) one of the variable names had a white space in it and ViSta thinks there are two variables, 2) the list of variable's types...ViSta did not like it for no good reason but I just deleted it and the file loaded correctly. I have attached the file to this message so in principle you could start playing with ViSta right now.

By the way, what analysis are you planning to carry out?

Cheers,

Pedro
