I know that since some time the colours for negative & positive residuals in mosaic plots have been chosen to be red & blue. But this is contrary to standard psychology and makes the intuitive interpretation of mosaic plots more difficult than necessary. In general, blue means low and red means high. Here, it's the contrary.

It would be helpful if the user could change this. But this is a minor remark.

Colours in mosaic plots were defined by Friendly, so I am free of guilt in this case. Nevertheless, there is a discussion about naturalness in colours that I think deserves to be discussed in depth. I do not know if there is any paper about it but it there is not, one should be written up.

Dear colleagues,

There are counter-examples to the "intuitive interpretation" of red and blue as presented by my fellow Frenchman Franck Thomas.

On the cheap  alcohol thermometers that you find outside homes in our country, negative temperatures are indicated in red, whereas positive temperatures are in blue.

On most two-dimensional plots, negative abscissas are on the left side (vs potitive on the right side). In the French parliament, the leftists sit left. Socialists  have chosen the pink colour and this turns to plain vermilion red when you look lefter to the seats occupied by communists, whereas right-wing and extreme-right parties have adopted blue colours.
