Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else is having trouble with DOI removing Java from all workstations. I recently noticed Maxent just stopped working, both in SAHM and as a standalone application. One of our "patch" Wednesday software updates installed an application that removes Java at startup on our machines.

We're being directed to use Amazon Corretto, and am just wondering if anyone else from other DOI branches has had this issue, and what the solutions where besides getting a exemption for Java usage.

Cheers,

Bill

Hello Bill,

I can't speak to DOI policy but, unfortunately, the standalone MaxEnt software is written in Java and likely requires a Java runtime environment to operate. Fore more technical questions about the compatibility of MaxEnt and Corretto, I would suggest posting on the MaxEnt Google Group.

The most direct solution appears to be an exemption request. Outside of that, there is an R-based implementation of MaxEnt (maxnet) that was created by Steven Phillips (one of the original MaxEnt authors) and it shouldn't require Java to run.

On a related note, I'm currently maintaining SAHM and changes like this are great to know. I've been toying with the idea of switching from a Java-based to an R-based MaxEnt implementation for a future release. After looking at the link for maxnet, let me know what you think!
