Lab users What benefit is there to mapping file 60/64 with NLT and result NLT codes? I have Loinced 60 already and this last step seems to offer no benefits that I can perceive Any insight? Dave Gifford

If you want your lab results to be LOINC encoded the mapping occurs via
the associated Result NLT code.

What happens if you have a LOINC code in file 60, but the LOINC code associated with the result NLT code is different?
Which one "wins"? or can you have more than one LOINC code associated with Results?

The Laboratory software does NOT use the LOINC field in file #60 at
all. This field was added to the Laboratory package by a non-laboratory
project that was a prototype for an earlier version of the HDR. It was
more of a quick and dirty solution that did not address the composition
of a LOINC code, especially the 6th component - method. The same
test/specimen and time aspect may be performed on instruments which use
different methodologies and when those methods are significant the
LOINC code assigned may be method specific as opposed to method-less.
One of the original intents on the usage of file #64 was as a
central/cross mapping point for different codes systems - ICD9, CPT,
LOINC.
