What do we know about how govenrments store electronic data on ATIs?

Federal government departments use an electronic document tracking
software although there is no government-wide standard for this
docketing system. Similarly, I get the sense that government
departments do not use a standard method of storing information about
access to information requests.

And that's just federal governments --

Provincial governments and municipal governments and some crown
corporations subject to access to information will have different
database layouts, I assume, for their individual ATI departments.

I know the Alberta government uses a tracking tool for letters to
departments and other action items, but I don't think it includes FOIP
requests. Actually I hope it doesn't, as these requests are not
supposed to be accessible by political staff.

How do you deal with problems like wanting to charge exhorbitant
amounts of money for just burning data to a disk?

Scott had a good idea before that the system should allow logging of
requests for additional fees.

That way it's possible to collect, say, the 10 most egregious fee
requests in a year-end publicity round-up.

I just re-read your question. I'd like to clarify: when you ask for
data in digital format, they charge you for burning a CD and mailing
it to you by post?

How often do you ask for data in a digital format?
