I notice our wonderful government has released the G20 budget.. as a scan...

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/read-the-nitty-gritty-details-on-g20-summit-costs/article1721801/?from=1721781

which is obviously absurd. It would prove a point and could be quite useful for linked, introspetive resources if transcribing this could be crowdsourced. It is only 28 pages, so wouldn't take many people doing a few pages each, each page twice. Any takers (I'm volunteering), are there current legal entanglements, or is this already being done?

This is obviously not a legal opinion, but I don't see any legal issues with copying the data into a spreadsheet to be sorted and analysed in other ways. I'd suggest making a spreadsheet in google docs and sending it around -- edits are instantaneous, so nobody would find themselves doing duplicated work.

Also note the first set of tables (5 pages) are repeated in English and French, so there are 5 fewer pages to transcribe.

Cheers,
Andy

Is anyone working on this? I am away for the weekend but would be
willing to spend some time doing data entry next week...

Short intro: long time lurker, first time poster. Library and
Information Studies student at UBC, primarily interested in data
curation for the sciences but looking to learn some basic
visualization in the next couple months.

Cheers,
Franklin

Yes, I am working on it with a friend, other contributors are welcome. We plan to 'meet' via chat at 3pm EST.

Step one will be converting it into a standard spreadsheet.

Step two will be importing it into a semantic wiki with a discourse system. This will allow anyone to access and add to the information, or just download it for their own uses.

I expect there to be a version finished by this evening.

I'd really rather do this in an inclusive barn raising, rather than exclusive glorious nerd style (am avoiding sequestered programming languages), so please let me know how you'd like to take part.

I also don't want to go through the whole domain name thing so I was hoping I could host it under a visiblegovernment subdomain when it's all done. The tentative name is canbudget, since I wouldn't expect it to be restricted to g20, but other suggestions are welcome.

If you were to use google docs to transcribing it into a google spreadsheet and you share the url around then other people could help transcribe...

Also, where will you be chatting at 3pm? Can others join?

Is anybody at Vizgov monitoring this?

Yes, the plan is to use google spreadsheets for the first pass spreadsheet. We can use the channel #canbudget from http://webchat.freenode.net/ , other sugestions are welcome.

And to save others the trouble of downloading, the docs are being uploaded to http://zooid.org/~vid/g20/  At 3 I can help organize transcribing, but of course anyone can start in the meantime.

Hmm... how about, as a shortcut, searching the CBC's transcribed tables and copying/pasting into the tables?

CBC just posted a digitized version:

It's great to see the CBC is finally posting things in plain text. And I hope no-one felt they miss-spent their time. But there are still a lot of things 'conventional' media won't do (today). Having a very easy to use spreadsheet is still of great value. I'm going to continue this and as mentioned put it in a wiki discourse system (to get an idea, see http://www.discoursedb.org), which I'm working on for another project, and will hopefully be of general interest. Will send an update as it progresses.

David,

I'd be happy to do a page or two.

Let me know where you're setting things up.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement so far, due to some travel it's
taking a little longer for the final site — ETA Monday for the import
and discourse setup. But the budget information is entered thanks to
anonymous helpers!

Some collected information and an overview is here:

http://canbudget.zooid.org/wiki/Main_Page (final domain tbd)

Although it'll hopefully be useful in the G20 context, the project is
more about creating easily re-usable content and facilities.

Regards,

David
