I find twitter a great way to stay current with people of similar
activities. Are any others in this group using twitter for a similar
purpose? My twitter id is; http://twitter.com/prawsthorne

I'm http://twitter.com/lukec (and also in the Vancouver area), but I'm mostly lurking on this group.

I'm interested in helping with backend development of RESTful APIs to expose open data to other systems.  REST APIs can make building mashups and other services easy.

Cheers,
Luke

I use http://identi.ca/millette

Identica has groups, hashtags, jabber, etc. And best of all it's free
software anyone can install where people on one server can follow
people on another one. Why fall for the twitter trap?

P.S.: I work for the maker of http://laconi.ca/ - the software used to
run Identica.

Hmmm, never heard of the twitter trap before. From my perspective, the most
important criteria for whether to adopt a new one is if it has a membership
that is posting content to it that is of interest to me, or would be
interested in getting stuff from me. In Canada, Facebook is more important
than other similar social networking tools because of its reach here.
Toronto is big centre for twitter uptake.

Functionality is quite secondary. Part of twitter's appeal lies in its lack
of features: elegant simplicity a la Apple versus feature bloat a la
Microsoft.

I'm JoeMurray on twitter, but I must admit I'm relatively unengaged in it.

Good idea to exchange twitter ids.  I am memeticbrand.

I have written a six part series on Why Twitter Matters.  I think everyone is a kind of thought leader on twitter.

insight interesting when you are advancing a cause like #visgov

I'm @kaplanmyrth on Twitter, Identi.ca and most other services and networks.

http://twitter.com/kaplanmyrth
http://identi.ca/kaplanmyrth

I'm a fan of identi.ca, though I use both networks. It makes sense for
people in movements and communities concerned with openness to look at
open alternatives like identi.ca. Also, Identi.ca got a massive upgrade
just today including adding groups.

So if you haven't started microblogging/twittering much yet but you're
curious about getting started, I'd encourage you to give identi.ca a
try. If you have a community that's on twitter, identi.ca can
automatically send your posts over to your twitter account. And there
are services you can use to watch twitter for replies so you can
participate in conversations that happen over there. It's worth thinking
about.

Cheers,
Andy

I was trying to mostly ignore twitter until this weekend at ChangeCamp
in Toronto. I had assumed that the discussion around the event was
going on on the newsgroup, but really it was mostly happening on
twitter. As proof: the #changecamp tag was a global top tag on
twitter Saturday. Not being on twitter meant being invisible.

It felt like stumbling on a large, fast-moving jungle tribe speaking
another language.

My tag is jennifer_vizgov.

Trap, lock-in. Compuserve can only talk to compuserve, aol only to aol...

I know I should answer myself, but like always I'm a little busy and
not that great a writer. May I suggest you read this but replace rdfa
with vizgov?

Oh, and since we have groups on Identica now, you might care to join:

Thanks for the ref. Good luck getting critical mass with identi.ca. But I
won't be following non-Twitter microblogs any time soon, just as I've
settled on just Skype for synchronous communications despite there being a
number of other competing technologies, many with bigger take-ups.

Cheers,
Joe

I'm

http://twitter.com/scilib

but in a way, connecting through searching on hashtags (as Jennifer
found for #changecamp and as is happening for #changecampottawa ) can
be a better way of getting informaton specific to your interests than
following a person. My twitter for example is usually more about
science library issues or day-to-day tech issues than it is about open
government.

I'm @acroll.

Incidentally, I'm attending the SIIA eGov event here in DC today.
Chatted with the SIIA's president, Ken Wasch (for whom I'm running
their Software Summit in San Francisco in May) about why software
companies should be lobbying government for transparency. It's in the
best interest of software firms to see transparency legislation
happen, since their software products will be used to achieve it. And
here, salespeople are positively drooling over the word "stimulus."

Also make contact with Google's government person, which should make
for interesting conversations on open government.

Will keep you all posted... looking forward to meeting up soon.
