Call for Papers for the Bio-Ontologies Community of Special Interest (COSI)

co-located with Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB)
(an all virtual conference)

taking place July 12-16, 2020

Bio-Ontologies (http://www.bio-ontologies.org.uk) is an ISMB Community
of Special Interest (COSI) (https://www.iscb.org/iscb-cosis) that
covers the latest and most innovative research in the application of
ontologies and more generally the organisation, presentation,
dissemination and application of knowledge in biomedicine and the life
sciences.

Bio-Ontologies continues to provide a vibrant environment for
reporting novel methods and sharing experiences on the construction
and application of ontologies in health care and the life
sciences. The informal nature of the event offers a constructive
environment to nurture discussion of innovative and scientifically
sound work that range from preliminary to completed, from both young
and experienced investigators alike. Bio-Ontologies participants also
benefit from a strongly interdisciplinary setting, where ISMB
attendees intermingle with members from American Medical Informatics
Association (AMIA) and the W3C's Healthcare and Life Sciences interest
group (HCLSIG), thereby increasing impact through broader
dissemination and enabling new and exceptional collaborations.

Call for Submissions

We invite the submission of short papers, flash updates and posters
for presentation at Bio-Ontologies. Papers are invited in areas, such
as the applications of bio-ontologies, newly developed bio-ontologies,
and the use of ontologies in data sharing standards. Example topics
include (but not limited to):

- Ontologies to support COVID-19 research
- Ontologies in annotation and metadata standards
- Machine learning and ontologies
- Text mining and ontologies
- Ontology evolution, quality and evaluation
- Ontologies, knowledge representation and reasoning

Deadlines and Presentation Length

We welcome extended abstracts (2-4 pages), flash updates (1 page) and
poster abstracts (1 page) as a PDF using the Bio-ontologies template
for papers (https://tinyurl.com/rqm73pg) or updates/posters
(https://tinyurl.com/re59tvb). Submissions can be made on the ISCB EasyChair
submission site
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ismb2020abstracts);
Bio-Ontologies will continue to accept submissions for oral
presentation that are up to 4 pages long. Please note that accepted
submissions require that one author present the work. The research
presentations are normally allocated between 20-25 minutes while flash
updates are presented in 5-10 minutes; due to the virtual nature of
the conference, we will adjust this time accordingly. The presenter
must register and pay to attend the conference and the presenter
should identify themselves as the corresponding author during the
submission process. Registration fees for ISMB will be significantly
reduced, details will be posted on the ISMB website.

Review Criteria

- Relevance, interest, and value of the topic to conference attendees
- Novelty, soundness, reproducibility, and significance of the problem
- Potential for an interesting presentation.

Special Issue

Selected abstracts will be invited to submit an extended version of
their work to a Special Issue of the Journal of Biomedical Semantics
(https://jbiomedsem.biomedcentral.com/).

The categories for submitting research to Bio-Ontologies were a bit
confusing, please find some clarification below:

There are two submissions considered at Bio-Ontologies: 1 page poster
abstracts and 2-4 page extended abstracts (or short papers) for oral
presentation.

Poster abstract submissions should be 1 page maximum. All accepted
poster presentations will include a 5-7 minute flash presentation.

Submissions for oral presentation should be 2-4 pages in length (the
ISMB submission site states a maximum 2 page limit -- please ignore
that, Bio-Ontologies will accept submissions up to 4 pages in length).
All submissions accepted for oral presentation can optionally also
be presented as a poster.

All submissions to Bio-Ontologies are reviewed. Review criteria include
scientific soundness, novelty, impact, and potential for an interesting
presentation.

We expect that most submissions accepted for oral presentation will be
considered for invitation to the special issue in the Journal of
Biomedical Semantics. In rare cases, we will also consider research
that has been accepted as poster presentation for invitation to the JBMS
special issue.
