Akina Nakamori was born in Tokyo in 1965, the fifth child and third daughter of six siblings. Her father owned a meat shop and her mother was a fan of Hibari Misora, a famous singer of enka, a traditional Japanese music genre. Nakamori inherited her mother's love for singing and began to dream of becoming a star. She entered a talent show called Star TanjÅ! in 1981 and won the grand prize, beating thousands of other contestants. She was signed by Warner Pioneer and began her professional career.
Nakamori quickly established herself as one of the leading idols of the 1980s, along with her rival Seiko Matsuda. She was known for her mature and sophisticated image, contrasting with Matsuda's cute and innocent style. She also experimented with different musical genres, from pop and rock to jazz and enka. She collaborated with renowned composers and producers, such as Tsugutoshi Goto, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tetsuya Komuro and David Foster. She won several awards, including four Japan Record Awards, the most prestigious honor in the Japanese music industry.
However, Nakamori's success came at a price. She faced immense pressure from the media and the public, who scrutinized her every move and expected her to maintain a flawless image. She also suffered from depression and insomnia, which affected her health and performance. In 1989, she attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills after breaking up with her boyfriend Masahiko Kondo, another popular singer. She survived but had to take a hiatus from the music scene to recover.
Nakamori Akina gradually returned to the music scene in the early 1990s, but her style and image changed significantly. She adopted a darker and more experimental sound, influenced by alternative rock, industrial and gothic music. She also dyed her hair blonde and wore more revealing outfits. Some of her albums from this period, such as Stock (1991), Unbalance + Balance (1993) and Enka (1994), received critical acclaim, but failed to match her previous commercial success. She also faced competition from younger and more popular singers, such as Namie Amuro and Ayumi Hamasaki.
In the 2000s, Nakamori Akina tried to reinvent herself again, releasing albums that covered various genres and themes, such as jazz (Utahime, 2003), Latin (Destiny, 2005), enka (Enka II, 2007) and rock (Divorcee by Selfishness, 2010). She also collaborated with other artists, such as Gackt, Koda Kumi and Superfly. She received positive reviews for her vocal performance and artistic maturity, but her sales remained modest compared to her heyday. She also faced some health issues, such as vocal cord nodules and cervical spondylosis, which forced her to cancel some concerts and take a break from singing.
In 2017, Nakamori Akina released her 27th studio album, Cage of Love, which was her last album under Universal Music Japan. She then announced that she would suspend all her activities for an indefinite period of time, citing personal reasons. She did not release any new music or make any public appearances for four years, leading to speculation about her whereabouts and well-being. However, in August 2021, she surprised her fans by opening an official Twitter account and a website, announcing that she was preparing to make a comeback. She also revealed that she had set up her own agency called HZ Village and transferred from Universal Music Japan to Avex Trax. She said that she was looking forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of her debut in 2022 with new projects and activities.
