Dear Ed.,
Each and every American deserves, at the very least, a living wage. President Obama and Senate Democrats have been pushing hard to put raising the minimum wage and restoring economic fairness at the top of the national agenda. I'm grateful that President Obama announced in the State of the Union that he would sign an executive order to raise the minimum wage for federally contracted workers -- a great first step for millions of Americans and their families. Now, the Senate is scheduled to vote on this issue within the week. I've joined 15 of my Senate colleagues, as well as the progressive community at DailyKos to thank President Obama for his leadership and urge Congress to make a high minimum wage a reality. We must fight for more economic fairness and equal opportunity in this country -- and raising the federal minimum wage for all Americans is essential for this goal. Our current minimum wage -- which sits at $7.25 per hour -- simply isn't sufficient to meet the needs of working American families, much less lift them out of poverty. President Obama's first steps towards raising the minimum wage are significant, but we can't stop there. Our bill would increase the federal minimum wage in 95-cent increments until it reaches $10.10 per hour in 2015. However, raising the minimum wage won't be easy. Even though this issue has enjoyed strong bipartisan support in the past, this time, we know many Republicans will oppose us every step of the way. Click here to join my fellow Democratic senators, the Daily Kos community, and me to thank President Obama and to call for a higher minimum wage at ARaiseForAmerica.com. Every American deserves a fair shot at achieving their own American Dream. Millions of people are counting on us. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Patrick Leahy
