Documentary and Discussion: After the Storm September 29, 2021 (6-9pm) -- Washington, DC.(Columbia Island Marina) -- This 27-minute documentary was featured in the 2021 Environmental Film Festival. It investigates wastewater overflows and reveals the network of underground tunnels being constructed below the nation’s capital to try to protect the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Webinar -- Managing Electricity Costs: The Benefits to Small Water Systems -- September 30, 2021 (2-3pm) -- This webinar will discuss how communities can evaluate their energy use and the strategies they can use to lower electricity costs while maintaining or improving their level of service to customers. The material in this webinar is best suited for individuals who operate, manage or own drinking water systems. Applications Accepted: Youth Conservation Leadership Institute (YCLI) – Submission Deadline: October 1, 2021; Institute: October 2021-May 2022 -- For Virginia high school students (9th-12th grades) interested in environmental conservation and stewardship. The Institute focuses on volunteer service, environmental stewardship, leadership and connecting students with environmental issues in their local communities.  Provides an opportunity to build leadership skills and connect with local mentors involved with environmental issues. Call for Poster Proposals: Chesapeake Watershed Forum (Virtual) – Deadline: October 1, 2021; Forum: November 3-5, 2021 – Forum Theme, The Future is Now: Getting to (and Moving Beyond) 2025 – Presenters will upload a PDF copy of their poster as well as an optional pre-recorded video. The posters will be on the event platform during the Forum, and a lunchtime Q&A session with presenters will be held virtually on November 4, 2021. 7.) 2021 Drinking Water Clinics -- Anyone with a private water supply system (including wells, springs, and cisterns) may participate. Drinking water clinics are organized by local Extension Agents and Virginia Tech faculty in the Biological Systems Engineering Department. Contact your local Extension office to express interest in a clinic. 9.) Webinar -- Putting the Brakes on Water Pollution: A Story of Industry and Government Collaboration for Copper-free Brakes -- October 6, 2021 (2pm) -- In January 2015, EPA, states, and the motor vehicle industry signed an agreement to reduce the use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. The agreement calls for reducing copper in brake pads nationwide to no more than 0.5 percent by weight by 2025. In addition to copper, this voluntary initiative reduces mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers, and chromium-six salts in motor vehicle brake pads. The webinar will explore how this voluntary initiative and these partnerships developed, the roles of the signatories, and the progress made so far.
