Appomattox River “Treasured Views” Community Workshops August 7, 2024 (Chesterfield, VA); August 8, 2024 (Hopewell, VA); August 13, 2024 (Zoom & Microsoft Teams); August 14, 2024 (Petersburg, VA) -- All community workshops will follow the same format. Seeking input on scenic views along the Appomattox River from the dam at Lake Chesdin to where the Appomattox River meets the James River in Hopewell. The goal is to identify the community’s most valued scenic areas and share them with officials and interested parties. Learn more at https://folar-va.org/treasured-views/. TMDL Community Engagement Meeting: Watershed Cleanup Study for Crooked Run, Stony Creek, and Pughs Run (Shenandoah County) – August 19, 2024 (4pm) – Edinburg, VA – During this total maximum daily load (TMDL) meeting, participants will be able to assist in the development of a cleanup study to address benthic impairments in these stream segments.  Sediment has been identified as the most probable contributor to the poor health of the impaired stream segments. Webinar: Innovations in Health Assessments - New Approach Methods (NAMs) and EPA’s Transcriptomics Assessment Product – August 21, 2024 (3-4pm) – This presentation will provide an overview of efforts to use NAMs to inform health assessments. Participants will learn about the new EPA Transcriptomics Assessment Product (ETPA) designed to address gaps and target chemicals lacking traditional toxicity testing data. Call for Presentations: 35th Annual Environment Virginia Symposium – Submission Deadline: August 31, 2024; Notification Date: December 13, 2024; Symposium: April 8-10, 2025 – Lexington, VA – Submission topics include climate change, emerging contaminants, energy, environmental justice, land use conservation, water quality, and more. Presentations can be given in 15-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour formats. College students are invited to present a poster during a special session. River Course 101: Stream Morphology Assessment Workshop – November 12-14, 2024 – Clemson, SC – This 3-day workshop introduces concepts of fluvial geomorphology and stream processes related to channel and floodplain formation, bankfull stage identification, applications of the Rosgen classification system in the Southeast, and provide participants the opportunity to engage in field techniques as well. Request for Proposals (RFP): Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants Program (CCGP) – Submission Deadline: November 21, 2024 – This grant opportunity is designed to advance environmental justice by reducing pollution, strengthening climate resilience, and building partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs). By statute, tribes must partner with CBOs to be eligible. The EPA plans to award an estimated $150 million for projects benefitting Indian Tribes in Alaska and an estimated $300 million for projects benefitting Indian Tribes in the Continental US and Hawaii.
