Request for Proposals: Contractor Support in the Development of Landscape Characterization and Monitoring in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed – Submission Deadline: July 9, 2024 (5pm) – The Chesapeake Conservancy is preparing a response to the US Environmental Agency’s (EPA) Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) EPA-R3-CBP-24-01 and is seeking contractor support.  Services related to land cover mapping, hyper-temporal spectral indices development, and BMP mapping are solicited.    ++ Bridging the Watershed Training – July 11, 2024 (virtual) & July 12, 2024 (in-person) – Washington, D.C. – Participants will learn how they can bring their students hands-on outdoor investigations focused on the Potomac Watershed. The first day of training will be virtual, and the second day will be in-person.
   ++ From Classrooms to Creeks: Environmental Literacy Training for Teachers – August 5, 2024 (8:30am-4:30pm) – Participants will learn how to help their students become better environmental stewards and meet state curriculum standards through the completion of a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). MWEE 101 is the training prerequisite for this course.

   ++ One-Day Workshops for Local High School Teachers – July 13, 2024 -- Free for public high school teachers in Accomack and Northampton Counties, VA and open to teachers from other counties for a small fee to help cover the cost of supplies. All teachers who attend will receive materials and lesson ideas to help incorporate what they learn into lessons in their own classrooms.
   ++ Three-Day Workshops -- August 16-18, 2024 (Middle Grades); September 20-22, 2024 (High School Grades) -- Sessions will include coastal ecology, group management during field-based lessons, and incorporating hands-on, feet-wet activities into lessons. Free for Virginia public school teachers. On-site lodging will be provided (meals are not included but are available on-site in the cafeteria). Funded with a grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment.

   ++ Student Travel Grants – Application Deadline: July 26, 2024; Symposium: November 5-8, 2024 (South Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada) – For undergraduate or graduate students presenting research at the Annual International NALMS Symposium.    ++ Kenneth H. Reckhow Scholarship Fund – This scholarship provides financial support to graduate students to use towards their education. 8.) Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW) News
   ++ International Coastal CleanupsAugust-November, and year-round cleanups -- Help organize or participate in a cleanup event. Site captains choose where volunteers clean litter, such as a local park, neighborhood, stream, or beach. Participants pick up litter and record what they find. CVW provides trash bags, gloves, and other supplies for cleanup events (Note, since CVW is moving, it is trying to distribute supplies early this year). (GWPC) Annual Forum -- September 10-12, 2024 -- Nashville, TN -- Focused on groundwater protection, water quality, and underground injection control best practices and regulations. 10.) Riparian Forests for Landowners Program -- Provides flexible, no-cost riparian forest buffer installation and one year of maintenance to landowners. The program is open to private property owners including property/homeowner’s associations or civic leagues in rural, urban or suburban areas. Buffers can be installed on open land adjacent to a water feature where a forested buffer of at least 35 feet in width from the water’s edge can be planted. Funding is provided by the Inflation Reduction Act through the USDA Forest Service and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Water Quality Improvement Fund Act.
