International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) – September 2021-November 2021 -- Volunteers remove litter and debris, and recycle found items along the shorelines of Virginia’s rivers, lakes, bays, beaches, and inland. Volunteers complete Data Cards or use the CleanSwell app to collect information about the amounts and types of litter and debris found. Hearing: Fairfax County Proposed Plastic Bag Tax Ordinance -- September 14, 2021 (4:30pm) -- Fairfax County Government Center, Fairfax, VA – Seeking input from the public on a proposed five-cent tax on each disposable plastic bag provided at checkout at grocery stores, convenience stores, and drug stores. Members of the public are encouraged to provide input through in-person, written, or recorded testimony. Webinar -- Moving Beyond Concern: Emerging Management for Contaminants – September 15, 2021 (12-1pm) – Learn about substances negatively affecting the health of humans and the environment, such as mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, and others. Management of these contaminants brings a unique set of challenges that differ from current efforts to reduce nutrients and sediment. Webinar – Virginia's State Water Resources Planning Process: Statewide Cumulative Impact Modeling of Future Local Water Demands – September 15, 2021 (1-2pm) – Learn about Virginia's approach to water supply and resource planning. It emphasizes the local development of future water demands and supply alternatives with the state's role of evaluating a resource and user effects using a range of scenarios. Request for Applications (RFA): 2022 Citizen Monitoring Grants – Application Deadline: September, 17, 2021 (5pm) -- Grant funds can be used to purchase equipment, pay for lab analyses, and train and educate citizens. This year’s RFA includes an application question to prioritize environmental justice, instructions for using DEQ’s new Electronic Data Mapper, and new guidelines for submitting data to DEQ. Call for Presentations: Environment Virginia Symposium 2022 – Submission Deadline: September 24, 2021; Symposium: March 29-31, 2022 – Theme: Where Leaders Meet -- Traditional presentations are 15 minutes in length, or propose a panel discussion with panelists discussing a topic from several viewpoints. 11.) 2021 Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) Challenge – Submissions due: September 30, 2021 (2pm) -- This challenge provides an opportunity for individuals and firms to contribute to the development of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-free firefighting foams as alternatives to AFFF. Submissions are accepted for innovative formulations that can approach and match the capabilities of legacy AFFF. These information collections aim to help EPA advance equitable and effective fish advisory programs that protect recreational and subsistence fishers and other underserved populations from consumption of contaminated fish.
