Murray Steinburg sent the attached document to me recently. Even though it was done in 2001 and is about Australia, this is the only study I know of that looks at the cost for the non-custodial or nonresident parent in which this study states is usually the father for caring for his child when he has his child. If there are American, particularly Virginia studies about this issue let me know. Below is the quote from the abstract. This study could be used in trying to persuade the senators not to vote for HB933 because I THINK the panel study did not look into this. But, I need someone else to check if the panel included the costs of the fathers in having his children and also someone else to study this document right now and input it into any written response to HB933. Any way you can at least tell the senators that there are studies that show that is very expensive for a father to take care of his children, particularly if he is a low income father.
Abstract: “Costs of contact are found to be high. Where contact is with one child for 20 per cent of the year, the cost of this contact represents about 40 per cent of the total yearly costs of raising that same child in an intact couple household with a medium income, and more than half of the total yearly costs of that child in a household with a low income.”
