Grand Theft Auto is a series of action-adventure games created by David Jones and Mike Dailly.[2] Later titles were developed under the oversight of brothers Dan and Sam Houser, Leslie Benzies and Aaron Garbut. It is primarily developed by British development house Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design), and published by its American parent company, Rockstar Games. The name of the series is a term for motor vehicle theft in the United States.

Subsequent games that follow this formula of driving and shooting have been called "Grand Theft Auto clones". Some reviewers even extended this label to the Driver series, even though this series began years before the release of Grand Theft Auto III.[220] Grand Theft Auto clones are a type of 3D action-adventure game,[221][222][223][224][225] where players are given the ability to drive any vehicle or fire any weapon as they explore an open world.[226] These games often incorporate violent and criminal themes. Notable games that are comparable to Grand Theft Auto are Saints Row,[227] Scarface: The World Is Yours,[228] True Crime: Streets of LA,[229][230] Watch Dogs,[231] Sleeping Dogs,[232] Just Cause,[233] Mafia[234] and The Godfather.[235]

In 2001, Rockstar Games revolutionized the action-adventure genre with the release of GTA III. This groundbreaking title ditched the top-down perspective of its predecessors, opting for a fully realized 3D third-person view that took the series to new heights. Set in the gritty and immersive Liberty City, players take control of the silent protagonist Claude, who was on a mission for revenge against those who betrayed him.

GTA III introduced many signature features that have since become synonymous with the franchise, such as carjacking, an extensive arsenal of weapons, and a colorful cast of characters. With its engaging storyline, realistic physics, and expansive open-world design, GTA III set a new benchmark for action-adventure games.

Since its inception, the GTA series has consistently pushed the envelope, delivering cutting-edge gameplay and expansive, immersive open-world environments. What began as a humble top-down crime simulator has evolved into a groundbreaking, genre-defining franchise that has left a massive mark on the gaming landscape. Each new entry in the series has built upon its predecessors, setting new standards for action-adventure games and leaving fans eager to see what Rockstar Games will come up with in future installments.

There's nothing quite like Sleeping Dogs, which delves into the brutal world of the Hong Kong triads for action-adventure gameplay. Like Yakuza, this is a good title for anyone interested in brawls, although the hand-to-hand combat is more reminiscent of Batman's flurries of blows in the Arkham games. The abandoned sequel to this title is a cancelation that still ranks, but that shouldn't stop anyone from enjoying Sleeping Dogs as a perfect game to play while waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6 to release.

A 4chan user claims to have seen a new trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), the long-awaited action-adventure game by Rockstar Games that has been leaked so much it might as well be a sieve. And GTA fans, hungry for any crumbs of information about their future addiction, seem ready to suspend their disbelief and indulge in some wishful thinking.

Billed as an "innovative action adventure game" and developed in collaboration with John Singleton and Snoop Dogg, who was set to lend his voice and likeness, Fear & Respect was Midway's answer to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and various other "gang" games.

Published by Nintendo in 1987, the Legend of Zelda quickly became the first mainstream RPG video game hit. Its gameplay is a mixture of action, adventure, and puzzle solving. A classically structured fantasy tale, Zelda put you into the green moccasins of Link, the young pauper destined to assemble the TriForce and use its power to overthrow the diabolical Ganon and save the princess Zelda. Along with Super Mario Bros, the game rescued the industry from the devastating effects of the crash of 1983. Since it's release, it has developed into still popular franchise, with 17 official games on all of Nintendo's major consoles, as well as several spin-offs.
