I either can't remember how to erase pictures or the way to
do it has changed.

Much to my annoyance, I sometimes get unwanted screen shots.
They are a pure nuisance to me. My son said it happens to
him too sometimes, and he is sighted. Anyway, if someone can
tell me how to be rid of them, especially without getting
rid of other photos that I want in my phone, I'd appreciate
it. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried opening the picture that you want to delete and then double tapping delete at the bottom of the screen?

I'll open next time. I don't do it often enough, so that whenever I do, I have to work at it.

If you select the albums tab, you can choose the category of photos that you want such as screen shots or burstss and things like that. Just select the  category that you want, then open the photo, and the delete button should be on the right at the bottom.

That would be just right. Those screen shots are annoying to say the least, but I do not want to erase my son's '59 Ford Edsel.

Most definitely not once you open the screenshot if you place a finger on it, it should tell you what the screenshot actually is so you can decide whether that is something you wanna keep or something you wanna get rid of I I have lots of accidental screenshots that I have to get rid of regularly. There's also a few that I deliberately took when I wanted to save something so I always check before I delete.
