Linking File Format to Application

Here’s hoping someone on this list can give me a resolution to the following issue.

I recently purchased an iPhone SE and loaded it with the apps from my iPhone 8. Among those apps is MS-Word.

I composed a Word document on my Mac and mailed it as an attachment to myself. The idea was to open the attachment on my SE with Word. But that does not appear to be happening.

How do you link Word files to the MS-Word app on the iPhone so the file can be appropriately dealt with?
