Why don’t messages delete everywhere if you delete them on the watch or on the phone?

I’m pretty sure I have asked this question before, but since we just saw WWDC Keynote and all the other stuff, and there was absolutely nothing said about this in either the Keynote or all the little articles about stuff Apple didn’t mention, I just wonder. I would think that it would be extremely annoying for pretty much everybody who has a Watch and a phone and who gets messages on both devices, to have to delete all conversations not just once on whichever device you used to read it initially, but again, on your other device. I know it’s annoying to me, and I don’t get boatloads of texts every day like some people do. Am I missing something? Surely, there should be a way where if you delete something on one of your devices such as a text message, it goes away everywhere else. That seems elementary.

Have you enabled iCloud syncing for messages on both devices?

I checked my Apple Watch settings and I have messages set to mirror my iPhone. This would lead me to believe that when you delete a message from your iPhone it should delete that message from your watch but no, this does not work. I even went into the settings on my watch and although I could see other apps for some reason I could not see the messages app.

Very strange!

I saw that too, but after playing around with that mirror my iPhone toggle, it just refers to mirroring your message notification settings and not the messages themselves.

I found out how  to turn on iCloud Sync ifromthe iMore web site. Essentially what you have to do first is turn on apple two factor authentication and then once you have that done you go into your Apple ID again, then iCloud and check the apps which are turned on or off. In my case my messages app  was off even though I already had two factor authentication on. I will paste the link below.

A cautionary note.

It is working but I seem to have retrieved an an awful lot of messages. When I first started it it said the messages would be safe forever until you delete them. Once I started deleting them it gave me the message that it would be deleted from all devices. So it may be a bit of a headache at first but once I get rid of the messages hopefully I won’t be able to delete them as they come through. Hope this helps.

Final note. I was able to go back into the message settings and reset the deletion period to 30 days.

Well, I just double checked in my phone. Two factor is on, which I already knew but I checked it anyway. And messages is also on according to how you check it in that article that you sent. It’s just not working right. I have storage space left. Very bizarre and annoying.

From everything I have read on the Apple forums, this is a very common problem among most Apple Watch owners.  Since this problem has been present for years now, I would assume that Apple is aware of it, but I am not sure why it has not been addressed.

I did learn that the Apple Watch does not back itself up to iCloud.  All watch backups are stored on your iPhone, then they are included in your phone's iCloud backups. So I am not sure if the Apple Watch ever connects to iCloud directly.  This is why you do not have iCloud backup / sync settings on your watch.

The only setting for iMessages that you specifically have on your watch is to mirror iPhone or set it to custom.  So at this time, it looks like your Apple Watch is still tethered to your iPhone in many ways.  Time will only tell if and how much this might change with the next major release of watch OS.

I do agree and think that the deletion of messages should have reflected on both devices back from the start.  And since they don't, should be a something that is at the top of the priority list to get working properly.

Chris
