When ever I downloaded something I got a list of downloaded items at the bottom of the screen. Now there is a icon on the address bar and it shows up all the time and I have to manually remove it (click somewhere on the screen). How can I get it to go back to the bottom of my screen.
A "new" icon/link for downloading embedded documents from a Canvas Page is suddenly appearing, and I am looking urgently to discover a way to disable or eliminate this item. We have copyright protected content we want students to view, but not download. (yes: they can find other more labor0inensive ways of copying content, but we don't want to make it quite so easy).
We had come up with a way to hid download links and set an auto-open preview setting in HTML, but this is not working for this new icon and I can't get any info from Instructure on the source of this new "feature". Is it on their server? is there a setting in Admin we can control? No answers from instructure as of yet...
I think you may find that these are an unintended consequence of the last update. We logged it as a bug. They seem to be showing where there are spaces at the end of links etc. I found editing links fixed it, but really I'm not going to do that for an entire institution.
Another solution that we use at our school is flipbook. It converts PDF file to HTML5 and you have control whenever you want to allow viewers to download the file. The one that we use called fliphtml5
Hi @lopezjamie. Curious if you ever figured out how to remove the download button in Canvas? I'm working on a course that uses an image button and I'm trying to link the button to a file without the download arrow appearing. I'm stuck on this too.
I have many albums and stations with the green download arrow which seems to indicate I can listen to these choices in offline mode at my work when I have no WiFi or internet. This is great but it has always been a very painstaking process to setup after many different attempts. Once again, I am now trying to download another station for offline listening but I can't get access to it for offline listening. I notice I have a green icon, but instead of an arrow with it, it looks like a circle instead. What does this icon mean? What do all the downloaded and offline icons mean? Please don't partially answer this question as I've seen with other posts, or give me some of the generic answers that don't work for me. With all the trial and error I always go through, I suspect there is a programming problem with your software, but with a little (maybe much) luck after a great deal of fiddling, not this time though, I usually get things to work for offline listening. I have used Pandora with my Android phone for several years now and I am a patient engineer, but something isn't right here.
If you are having trouble getting a particular station downloaded, I'd recommend signing out of the app and signing back in, which will reset the download process. Then, make sure to keep Pandora in the foreground of your device while the download completes. If you continue to have trouble, check the download icon for the content you are attempting to download. The two rotating arrows indicate that the content is still in the download process and the highlighted downward pointing arrow means the content has successfully downloaded. If the icon is not highlighted, try downloading the content again and keep the app in the foreground while your offline music downloads. Keep in mind that stations and large playlists take a longer time to download.
As a side note - Adobe is very smart - keep an eye on a small floating Adobe icon while in the email that asks to make Adobe the default for opening pdf files. If you see this - it's a short cut way to fix this too. Good luck. Christine
This happenned again on my work PC and trying to fix it from Windows setting didn't work. Then I clicked on the adobe icon on the right end of the outlook attachment, which was a quick way to fix it. Wonder why it happened again though. Hope its not some bug!
i'm not even sure why it changed in the first place, i've been using this computer for a really long time, but this worked perfectly. the chrome option wasn't printing out my documents properly & i also just prefer for my PDF documents to be separated from my chrome searches - aestehtic purposes. you are awesome! i usually don't even socialize on sites like this but i signed in just to thank you because, man, was that annoying. thank you, Christine!
I have followed all of these suggestions, even another one I found which was to set Chrome to only download .pdtfs and not open them. The only thing that works is changing the default app and restarting Outlook. But weirdly even that fix only lasts a day or so and many times when I go in to set the default app it's already set correctly, but I have to change it and then back again for it to fix the issue.
Is there a registry entry that can over ride all of these settings?
I just started having this issue today. Opened several attachments this morning that were fine - opened as usual with Adobe. All of a sudden everything changed to Chrome, including some of my saved .pdf's! I'm going to try this solution when I go back to my office and hope it works. I hope it also works for those documents that for whatever reason are now showing as Chrome documents instead of Adobe .pdf's! That's throwing me off, because they were all opened AND saved as Adobe .pdf docs - and Bam..outta the blue they are Chrome! Fingers crossed this works!
All of my PDF files have had their icons changed to Chrome icons. The files no longer open with Acrobat Reader....they now open through the Chrome browser. I'm not sure what caused this. The only thing I can think of is that my girlfriend was on my computer renaming a PDF when I noticed a popup that asked something about file extension or destination. I tried to tell her not to hit the "yes" button, but I was too late. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. Can anyone help me to get the icons changed back to PDF icons?
You need to reset your file associations so that your system uses Reader to open pdf files. It's pretty easy to do but varies from one OS to the other. You can google the information on resetting file associations and find instructions or you could let us know what OS you are using and we can let you know how to do it.
To set Chrome as default, I used "Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Your Default Programs". This was after the Windows 10 Action Center "All Settings>System>Default Apps" method would not set Chrome as default.
To solve the icon issue I did a right click on any PDF file, picked "Open With>Choose Another App>selected Acrobat(or Reader)>checked the "always use this app for pdf". I then had to do a restart and all was good again.
Failed option 2. type chrome://settings/content in the Chrome address bar. Check the box at the end "Open PDF files in the default viewer application, the Finished button. After I did this I tried to open a PDF on a webpage and Chrome went crazy, flashing a blank tab open and closed repeatedly.
Failed option 3. Windows 10 Start > Settings > Choose default apps by file type > .pdf > select Adobe instead of Chrome :
Result: the setting did not update for me, Chrome could not be dislodged this way.
Just removed the shortcuts in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs then found the exe's (I had three applications that Chrome took over) and put the new ones in there. Worked no problem. Hope this helps.
I have the same problem with pdf files opening in Chrome. I tried changing the setting in Chrome to use the default program but it still continued to open in Chrome (even though Acrobat was the default program). I gave up, uninstalled Chrome and used Opera. Despite this, the same problem exists except now it tells me Chrome needs updating! If I use File Manager to list th files it shows pdf files with the Chrome icon. By selecting the default program to open & selecting Acrobat all is fine until next reboot.Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. ANy help greatly appreciated. Thx.
But it would not let me put it on the Safari tool bar because I did not have any recent downloads. I didn't think of that. Then another person sent a post that told me I needed a download for it to appear. I found an old email and downloaded its attachment. Then I got the download icon. I thought it used to be there all the time whether or not you had any recent downloads. I was wrong or Apple changed something.

Hello All. I had the same issue. I am using Windows Home Premium with Service Pack 1. All I did to get the preview of my pdf files was to Open Acrobat Reader PC / Edit / Preferences / General - I then checked the box to "Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer" save your settings let Acrobat Reader do what it needs to do. (this only takes a few seconds) and that is it you will now have your previews.
Did you ever find an answer for this??? I am sure you have since your post is rather old but just in case someone else gets here and needs it. I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did.
Tried the fix - it ran correctly on Windows 8 64 bit, Adobe Pro - but the icons remain Adobe Logo no matter what I do - tried changing file properties to every conceivable combo - no luck - posted question in support forum... we shall see what Adobe says...
