Idon't understand how the computer can get so many resources so fast. I'm looking at the timeline and the computer can build more villagers and more military than I can. The thing that baffles me as well is that in spite of their large military and villager expenses, they can still age upgrade much faster than I can. When you guys play Expert, do you focus primarily on food and gold to bolster your age upgrades and build tons of villagers...then work on military? What kind of buildings do you build at what times? I always find if i try to build a market or something in Age one I'm always scrabling for wood and dont have enough for houses. This is what I am currently doing (Spanish).Game start:Age I: Immediately put most of my villagers on gathering from bushes. I only let two villagers gather the given supplies that are lying around. I build one house with one of those villagers then build one other villager. They all gather food. Meanwhile I am exploring. While upgrading, I put half of my villagers on wood, to build a market and save up for a barracks.Age II: I usually almost have enough wood for a barracks. So I'll build that when I can. I keep on making villagers, end up with 4 or 5 on gold, 8 to 10 on berries (food) and about 8-10 on wood. I try to build an army of at least 10, usually musketeers, along with the 6 rodelgoes I get with the home town shipment. I usually upgrade wood harvesting and gold at the market. I try to save up for Age III, then build lots of villagers and military from there.Should I not upgrade? I usually am low on wood lots. Is hunting a better food source than berries? What do you guys do? Thanks guys! AuthorReplies: Byzantine2793

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 02:45 PM EDT (US) 2 / 22 I play as british usually so this is my play style. I personally thing beating the expert computer with spanish is stupid because of the spanish rushing ability. however I just beat the AI on expert with british without rushing for the first time. I was like you too, but I kept practicing until I got better.first off I let all my villagers gather the crates. then I split them half and half wood and food. and I start making villagers at my TC. I tell the villagers to task on the huntables as they complete. once I'm getting food faster than I can create villagers I switch the spawn point to wood. I build homes every time I get to 150 wood. by the time I have about 20 villagers I should have about 10 of food and 10 on wood. I continue creating villagers and task them on food. I advance at about 25 villagers. that way once I reach the next age I have a large amount of income. BTW, I use the 2 villagers card at the begining and then save them for age 2. once I reach the 2nd age I spend all my cards on military units so that the AI doesn't kill me with their early rush. I also make use of militia form TC. after advancing the key is to never stop makign villagers. you need to start a group on gold once you reach the new age. I also build a market between age 1 and 2 so that I can start researching the tech upgrades. make sure and build counters to the AI units. don't let them slaughter your citizens either. another thing you can do is build a wall around most of your base. the AI won't bother to knock down a wall unless it has too. leave a spot on the wall open and gaurd it heavily. I use walls liberally against the AI because I don't hink it has good strategies against them. anyways, make sure and keep building those villagers until you get to age 3. once you are age 3 you should be OK because the AI is TERRIBLE later in the game. my best advice is if you try all this and still loose, try again. you'll only get better. Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 05:02 PM EDT (US) 3 / 22 Sandbox should have the AI build lots of buildings and very few military units so that the person playing can literally "just play around" as if it were a sandbox.Hard needs to be a little harder. Hopefully they will add play modes such as a Defensive AI who builds walls or a Power Horse AI who builds large armies and focuses on ceasing and protecting trading posts.Expert seems fine. A little tougher and attacks with large forces. schildpad

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 05:07 PM EDT (US) 4 / 22 i am ashamed, the ai beat me in late game, i think it learns.normally it sucks in late game, but this time they attacked me from rear with entire army and destroyed half my economy. luckily i just got factory so i was producing rockets. but what did that damn ai, it just stayed attacking, one attack had 2 mortars and over 8 field guns. never had this before, most of the ai's attacks had 5 or more cannons"such a kind fellow!" ķįŋğ_Ćħŗĩ_ĬĬ Furby killer should be crowned leader of AOE forum [SW_GD]Teutonic gelheadhobo

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 06:15 PM EDT (US) 5 / 22 I'm in the same position as you Dan, hard I can win all the time, it's not really a challenge and I never lose, then I tried a few games on expert and WOW. It was tough, extremely hard. I think if hard was a bit harder, that would be good, or if they had another difficulty level. Lower the difficulty of expert would offend some players, while raising the difficulty of hard would offen players as well. So I guess people like you and me just fall into the cracks.Does anyone else feel like when they spell pwn with an O they just made a spelling mistake? XsX_Invader2

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 06:24 PM EDT (US) 6 / 22 hard is supposed to be hard not easy. if you want easy play an easy comp. they should increase hard...if they decreased expert then that would make it too easy... lol. i already know how to beat the expert... kinda hard but it can be done.as spanish it's going to be really hard... especially since british is pretty much what counters spanish. ginger_chris

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 06:29 PM EDT (US) 7 / 22 it just doesnt really seem that fair with the 50% economy boost, if they beat me using better tactics thats fair, or maybe 20% boost, but 50%? they can produce twice as many of anything you cna build, and level up twice as fast. Thats a huge advantage. Ive beaten expert once, but it was far too hard and i resorted to staying on the island on new england :$, but i can beat hard every time. It would be nice if there was an intermediate, say a 10%-20% boost. gelheadhobo

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 06:33 PM EDT (US) 8 / 22 Maybe the problem is that no AI has been invented good to enough to beat a human player. If you had, for an example of an uber-pwnerer, Mokon, playing against an AI with no resource boost and it was the best that ES could come up with, it would be even less of a challenge than it is now. Untill better AI is developed, they're going to keep getting those resource boosts and your going to have to live with it.Does anyone else feel like when they spell pwn with an O they just made a spelling mistake? Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 07:49 PM EDT (US) 9 / 22 aom titan lvl ai had a 100% boost, think how i felt when i had to beat it 1v1... lol'ai is pretty hard to make. i learned how to make basic ai for individual people... but then when i got to advanced it just looked like jibberish :P Dagobert

Skirmisher posted 10-04-05 08:56 PM EDT (US) 10 / 22 Not enough difficulty levels? Fallin g in the cracks?Well, there might be a solution.Playing against 2 moderates is actually tougher than against a hard. danmagicman7

Skirmisher posted 10-05-05 01:58 AM EDT (US) 11 / 22 Well, on the demo you can't really do that now can you. ;-) Ceres629

Skirmisher posted 10-05-05 05:34 AM EDT (US) 12 / 22 well you can if you use the available mods...---> Ceres629's AoE3 Strategy Guide (Portugal + British)

You need to add some extra personality files or they sit there and do nothing.

Goto your install directory x:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III Trial\AIcopy the file 'isabella.personality' and name the copy 'isabella2.personality'then goto \My Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3 Trial\Users and open 'NewProfile.xml' in notepad. NOT C:/programfilessearch for:

'2'

and change the 2 to 3.now search for: 'ivan'

and change 'ivan' to 'isabella2'.

NOTE: If you want 4 players or more, you just need to repeat the process for however many player you want. For 4 players, copy an extra personality file and name it 'isabella2'. Then find 'napoleon'

and change 'napoleon' to 'isabella2'.

ect.

This alone should work, but if not, try changing the line '1337' and swapping '1337' with '2'.
