Like playing the violin, tuning it is not easy at all. This is
especially true when you are just starting out, but don't worry! It
will get easier after the first few times. If your violin is not in
tune it is likely you are not producing pleasant sounds when you are

The four strings of a violin are tuned in perfect fifths; the lowest
sounding string is G, the next is D, then A and the highest sounding
string is E. You tune a violin by gently turning the pegs which are
underneath the scroll of your violin. These will tighten or loosen the
strings to get the desired pitch.
When playing the violin, you need to listen to the note and match it
by turning the pegs. If the sound is lower than the correct pitch you
need to turn the peg to the right until it is correct. If it is too
high, turn it to the left. What you need now is an example of the note
to match, there are three ways you can learn how to tune your violin.
1. Most beginner violinists find it easiest to use an electronic tuner
to tune a violin. There are two main types; those which play you the
note for you to copy and those which you play to the note into, whilst
tuning and it tells you when you have the correct pitch. A great

2. You can also tune a violin using a piano or a keyboard. You only
have to play open strings on your violin so it is easy enough to do.
This is a good way to tune every string and you can turn the knobs
whilst the note on the violin and piano can be heard. The G you need
to locate is 3 keys to the left of middle C. The D is next to middle
C. The A is the A 5 keys after middle C. The E is the 9th key from
middle C to the right.
3. Tune your violin online. This is handy if you don't have access to
a piano or tuner at the moment. There are tune your violin online web
sites which allow you to play a recording of the note so that you can
match it and tune your violin online.
Make sure you check the strings over a few times. As you tighten each
of the strings you are increasing and decreasing the tension which
might make the violin bend very slightly which changes the pitch of
