Dear Teacher,
I was recently in India and contracted typhoid and
2 rather unpleasant parasites "Entamoeba histolytica" and
"blastocystis hominid" both of which lodge in the intestine and cause
symptoms including nausea, flatulence and diarrhea. The typhoid seems
to be clear after hospitalisation and treatment with antibiotics but
the parasites are still with me.
I wonder if you could give any advice as to yoga practices which might
help with this problem. I am wary of another course of powerful
antibiotics and would like to recover as naturally as possible. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
respectfully in the spirit of yoga
Christopher Conn.

Dear Christopher Conn:

Thank you for your e mail. I am sorry about your painful experience in India recently. I hope you are feeling better now.

About four weeks after you gave gotten rid of the infection, you may start doing your regular yoga practice gradually. I wonder if you have taken any specific treatment to control the parasites you mention like anti amebic treatment. If you do not want allopathic medicines you may consider alternative approaches like Ayurveda. You may also consider taking Fenugreek, about one tablespoon twice a day, swallowing it with either water or yogurt with active bacillus.  This may help relieve cramps and abdominal pain and heal tiny ulcers formed sometimes during typhoid. You may add one or two spoons of ghee, or sesame or olive oil with your food.

You may not do, initially, any hard and powerful abdominal exercises like Kapalabhati and the bandhas., but may gradually start some gentle forward bends  like in Balasana with your interlaced  hands gently pressing against the lower abdomen. You may start Sarvangasana and relax your legs and abdomen, for a few minutes (5mts or more). Later you may do bandhas and Kapalabhati. Add Pranayama to your daily practice especially long exhalation. Shanmukhimudra will help to relax the system especially the abdominal region.

Thank you and with best wishes

Sincerely

Srivatsa Ramaswami
