September 2019 Newsletter from Srivatsa Ramaswami--Sundara Kanda

In August 2019, I was at Loyola Marymount University to teach a 100 hr Vinyasakrama TT program. Had very good participation. A few more attended the Yoga Sutra and Pranayama sessions. I have been teaching at LMU from about 2005 or so almost every summer. The University has a beautiful campus and attracts very talented and dedicated participants. Here are two of pictures of the friends who attended the program

My Guru wrote a text titled "Nathamuni's Yoga Rahasya". He used to quote extensively from that book during my studies with him but it was not published during that time. He once dictated the slokas which I took down. Subsequently KYM got it published. It is an extraordinary text. I will be teaching this at Chicago Yoga Center in Chicago in September last weekend. I have been teaching at this wonderful studio of Suddha Weixler for more than ten years every September. Apart from Vinyasakrama asanas I was able to teach several texts Sri Krishnamacharta taught like the Yoga Sutras, Katopanishad, Yoga Yagnyavalkya, Samkhya Karika, Hatayogapradipika and others. Suddha has given me several opportunities to teach texts Sri Krishnamacharya taught and now a book written by Krishnamacharya himself. Here is the link for the program

In October, from 20th, I am scheduled to teach for six days at Centered City Yoga in Salt Lake City, Utah. Forenoons will for vinyasas and asanas. pranayama and Dharana practice and afternoons will be for study of Samkhya Karika text verse by verse. Here is the link

I am planning to leave for India end November for a few months. I am scheduled to do two programs in Chennai at Yoga Vahini. One will be a 20 hr 5 day program in January (Yoga Yagnyavalkya) and then a 100 hr Teacher Training program in Vinyasakrama Yoga consisting of 60 hrs of Vinyasakrama asana, 20 hrs of pranayama, mudras , internal organs and Dharana practice and the 20 hrs allotted to study of Yoga Sutras, sutra by sutra. Sep 2nd is Vinyakachaturti. I recorded a cd in 1984 Mahaganapati puja with ashtottara and then Ganesa sahasranam running for about an hour. Here is the link

Sundara Kanda

He, the crown prince was to be anointed the King the next day. His step mother though sent for him and informed him that his father the ruling King would be making his younger half brother as the King and that he, the crown prince would spend next 14 years in exile. Rama left the country immediately with his remarkable wife Sita along with his alter ego, another  half brother Lakshmana. While living in the forest his wife Sita was abducted and Rama had no clue about her whereabouts or her welfare. The abhorrent abductor Ravana was pressing her to marry him but she repeatedly refused. Confined under a tree surrounded by rakshasis, and finding no hope of release from the clutches of Ravana, Sita in desperation decided to commit suicide using her own long beautiful hair as the noose. From becoming the queen of the most powerful and prosperous country in the world at that time and separated cruelly from the perfect husband Rama, the fall in fortunes was unbelievable.

In the meantime Rama befriended a group of monkey like beings, vanaras. He sent out many to search for Sita. Anjaneya was sent to look for Sita in the southern direction over Lanka. Anjaneya, an extraordinarily strong devotee of Rama and considered son of Vayu devata or wind god, stood on top of a hill, did deep pranayama and flew over the Indian ocean like a glider, and landed in Lanka. Finally he located Sita in the Ashoka grove at the nick of time, just as Sita was  preparing for the desperate final act. Anjaneya identifies himself as the messenger from her husband Rama and skillfully dissuaded her from taking the extreme step. He promises her that Rama would come within the next 2 months and save her from the  savage called Ravana.

The episode of Anjaneya's remarkable journey to Lanka and his successful mission is contained in the section called Sundara Kanda in the famous epic, Ramayana. This literary work called Adi Kavya is said to be the first and also the foremost Sanskrit texts outside of the vedas. Ramayana is read  and listened to by thousands of people everyday even today. The Sundara Kanda section of Valmiki Ramayana is over 2800 verses of 68 chapters from the Ramayana of about 24000verses.

Many people find sudden change in  fortunes for worse and find no hope of recovery or revival. Sita was to be the queen of a powerful country and was the wife of a perfect man. But in a short period of time she was in exile; then  was abducted and tortured emotionally without any hope of escape whatsoever. It was then Anjaneya appeared before her and everything changed thereafter and she became the queen again reunited with her beloved husband. Many people even now read, chant or listen to the Sundara kanda portion of the Ramayana, especially when life appears hopeless with insurmountable difficulties. I chanted the entire Sundara Kanda some 25 years back for a recording company who released the chantings in an album of two cds. I find that these are now freely available on the internet in You Tube. It is in 27 videos and includes the complete Sundara Kanda and Aditya Hridayam and coronation of Rama in all 70 chapters. Unfortunately video number 7 is untraceable (maybe you can find it). I have made a playlist and maybe you would like to listen when you have the time, the chant is for, well, a little less than ten hours. You may also wish to share with friends. Sundara kanda parayana is resorted to regularly and at times of desperate situations
