icannot use the external hard drive like a normal flash drive where i can plug into a computer and look at any of the files i have on there. i have one computer for home use (windows xp) and another netbook for school (windows 7) because it is lighter. i have many movies and albums on my drive so i would like to have access to it. Even if i put documents such as word files, i do not have access to both sometimes depending which computer i saved the file on.

second problem: i have two files currently locked. i know it is locked because on the Windows 7 there is a lock on the folder of the icon. and in the windows xp it appears as empty and wont allow me access to the folder. how would i make it so that the drive recognizes both computers or maybe all computers just by inputing the password to the drive.

Hi,

I am a student at school, and I use musescore to help with my schoolwork. Recently that has been a problem because on my computer at home I have musescore 4.2.0 whereas on the school PCs they only have 4.0.0 and we can't update it. I can't open work which I have edited at home on the school PCs because it's an older version of musescore. Is there any way around this problem without updating the school PCs? Would it be possible for me to downgrade my home computer? Or is there a way to open the newer files at school?

Thanks

As I said, if they can't install 4.2, they won;'t be able to install 3.7 either. But of course, packaging that doesn't require installation works around that nicely. That's why I recommended the portable version of 4.2. Although, it seems there is not yet a portable build for 4.2.1. Nightly builds are of course another option.

Only if you don't mind losing all MU4-specific information, and then having to go through that process each and every day as you go back and forth between home and school. That's not really practical except as a last resport. The portable 4.2.1 is by far the better solution.

I disagree that running a portable app is a not a good thing to suggest. It's by far the best thing in this scenario. Well, actually better still would be to simply ask the sysadmin to do the update. Any music school running a computer lab would generally do this gladly on request- it's kind of their job. The portable app is more of the best interim solution.

If one insists on converting files, you can get away with only doing it once only if also wish to restrict yourself to 4.0 on the home machine as well. That's not a reasonable thing to recommend either given the enormous improvements that have been made since. And the fact that so much of the other available music one might want to access will also need converting, and again, so much information will be lost in the process.

MuS 3.7 Evolution requires no installation and has no installer. Simply unzip the zipped file to any location, e.g. C:\MyProgs... and create a suitable link to \bin\musescore3.exe on the desktop or wherever.

Applies to Windows.

So it could be a solution for them.

I can already name one problem: If the score of MuS 4 uses double measure repeat signs, they are not handled correctly.

It is only converted to a single measure repeat character and the following measure remains empty. And worse still, the second measure is now repeated where the first should be repeated.

Example: I have M1, M2 and M3&4 are indicated by a double repeat sign. So both measures M1 and M2 should be repeated in M3 and M4. But it plays M1, M2, repeats the notes of M2 in M3 and does nothing in M4.

So if you want to convert from MuS4 to MuS3, it is advisable to avoid double measure repeat signs and rather copy the notes.

The list of MU4 features that would be lost upon opening in 3.7 also includes playing technique annotations, gradual tempo changes, harp diagrams, guitar bends, capo, and tuning elements, cross-voice arpeggios, and various mixer settings. That plus having to repeat this daily - there is no way anyone should seriously consider this for the case at hand over the no=brainer simple alternative of running 4.2.1 portable on the school system.

I'm having problems to open maya files created at school. At school we have Maya 2014 comercial version for Ubuntu and at home I have the 2013 student versin for mac OS 10.6.8 and windows XP, and when I try to open a mb file it says // Error: line 0: Error reading file.

The simplest answer is to upgrade to version 2014 at home. In general there is no reason to save your file as a .mb. Save it as a .ma. In addition, on your home version which is currently 2013 go to the Windows-> Settings/Preferences -> Preference menu and bring up Preferences. Once you have this open go to Settings -> Files/Projects. Close to the bottom of this dialog box is a checkbox to Ignore version. Make sure that this is checked. See the attached screenshot.

I teach Maya at our local Community College. I see this issue often with students. Usually, by simply always saving your file as an .ma and setting ingore version you can pretty much go between one version of Maya and another as long as they are not seperated too much in version, ie, 2011 2012, 2013 2014. If you have used a specific feature that exists in one version and not the other, and it is in your history and you have not deleted your history for your objects, you will most likely have issues. Just tonight I edited a file for a student at home using 2015 and we have 2014 at school. I saved the file as a .ma. The student did what I detailed above and, while Maya complained, it actually opened the file fine and everything was correct. Your milage may vary. As I said first on, the best way is to get the same version. As a student you may download 2014 although you might have a bit of an issue as the Student Site may already upgraded to 2015. If so if you conatct Autodesk there may be a way to get the 2014 version.

I was not familiar with a Morpheus rig but I found it with a quick Google search. Off the top of my head I would not see why you could not save a file with this as a .ma. That being said, this is a fairly complicated object, one in fact that to my previous note, may not transport well between versions.

A note on the "Ingnore Version" setting. This actually does nothing when you save a file. This is to tell Maya to ignore the version setting found in the file header of a maya scene file when opening a file. It does not do anything to a scene file, reading or writing, it simply tells maya to try to open the file and not reject it simply because the version of the file is different than the version of the application.

Recently I have left school and I have no idea how to remove school software from my computer. I have tried going through hidden files with commands+shift+dot though it seems they hide stuff well cause I can't find the remote access software they downloaded onto my computer anywhere. I also know that they have access to computer because an admin can still edit files etc. (screenshot below)

I am using Dropbox desktop App on my Mac (home) and PC (work). On the Mac (OSX latest version and Office 2011) everything works fine. But on my PC (Windows 7 Pro, Office 2010) files open as Read Only. If I go to Properties and uncheck "read only" for the file or folder in question, it is fine. But when I reboot, all my Dropbox files once again default to "read only". Can you help?

I am having the same problem with my Mac. I imported a bunch of files into dropbox and now excel insists on trying to open them all read only. if I move the file out of the dropbox folder, it opens fine. It is only in the dropbox folder that it screws up.

This solution is for Mac. Dropbox has a bug that doesn't clear the hidden lock file. Mac doesn't make it easy to view hidden files like on Windows. I tried several options and this worked first shot and is from a reputable source.

This will set Finder to show hidden files. 1 - Run a script to show hidden files. 2 - Manually delete the lock files which will be shown in faded color. Then you run the script to hide hidden files again.

I am having the same problem with my dropbox files - but not on a mac. I have unchecked the whole dropbox folder, unchecked individual folders, given administrator permissions and tried every which way to correct it, but each time I open the program I am told the files are read only.

I have tried restarting the computer - and this time was told that Windows Firewall blocked some aspects of Dropbox. I checked that it should be allowed through.

Then tried again to change the read only designation, but without success. I even tried the advanced mode and unchecked the other choices (archiving and searching) but it made no difference. Even though I give admin permissions, when I look again they are back to being read only.

I saved my excel files from my MacBook Pro OS X 10.10.5 to DropBox. Now when I open either in DropBox or save to my desk top I can Read Only. Will not allow me to make changes. Help! This just started after my update to OS X 10.10.5. How do I fix this?

Thank you Thomas F. I tried running the Repair twice and still I have the same problem. I have an appointment at Apple later this week to go by and see if they can fix this issue. This started after I upgraded to the OS X 10.10.5

This really should be on the splash screen for the Academic license version: Pretty much, no. I'm certain that they want to prevent organizations outsourcing work to schools and Univerisities as a way to get the benefits of their products without paying for their products.

Thanks everyone for the responses, it's really too bad as it seems entire unrealistic a company could or would try to outsource CAD work to schools. At least where I work, it could simply never happen.

I would love to install the student edition on the company laptop, but unfortunately they have a very strict policy that keeps it fully locked down. No software installation is allowed, no exceptions. If there is a way to install the student edition without requiring admin access I'm all ears.
