Subject: Squirely alpine scrolling behavior issue resolved

A couple of months ago I wrote asking about alpine's habit of starting
uncontrollable scrolling down the message index list.
This wasted so much time, and it was so frustrating that I pretty much gave up
on alpine.
This meant that I couldn't do all my e-mail related stuff on my CLI-only box
since I can't get URLs to open from mutt on the Debian machine.
I fired up alpine to click on some links with out firing up the laptop and
thunderbird yesterday.
Guess what? No issues; none!! The one difference between then and now besides
probably completely unrelated updates and upgrades; I no longer have 10-20
_thousand messages in the gmail inbox. I still have some cleanup to do in
"all-mail", but I'm down to one or two hundred messages in the inbox.
I tried alpine on my Vinux 3.0 box as well as on the Debian wheasy machine and
all seems well.
I have no idea what the threshhold is, but as I never remember having trouble a
year or more ago using alpine, and back then I probably had message counts in
the low thousands, the danger zone is probably not reached till one has at
least a couple thousand items in their inbox, and it may be much higher than
this.
If anyone has imap inboxes with lots of mail just sitting there, why not fire
up alpine and put it to the test. I suspect any folder will act the same, but
maybe not, and one's configurations may make a difference as well.
Anyway, I'm very happy to have Alpine back in my toolkit I still findbasic
sorting and cleanup faster with mutt, but now I can go back and read and save
with alpine, and never need the GUI for e-mail; well, almost never. And on
second thought, I correct myself. I did at times have uncontroled scrolling
last year, but onlly when down arrowing intensely, and doing multiple deletes
as best I can recall.
