I am forwarding this message to both the support and development
mailing lists as it is relevant to both. This provides information
about an open-source daisy player and a request to include it in a
future release - so could people try it out and if it works as
expected could you put it in the Vinux repository Bill/Luke?

Comments: Dear Vinux team,
While writing an installation manual for a software DAISY player for
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - a superb player, created by Jos Lemmens
http://www.jlemmens.nl - I came across Vinux.

I'm visually impaired, did a quick install and was
surprised and amazed. Please let me explain.
Surprised: What a superb distro for visually impaired!
It installed right out of the box, and even more important, It had
everything on board I need. I even expected a DAISY player ready for
use.

Surprised: NO DAISY player!

An that's the reason for writing you. In my humble opinion it would be
a sensible idea to incorporate Jos Lemmenss daisy-player into the
Vinux distribution.
The player is OSS, licensed under GPL v3, code is included. It works
fine under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, please see the manual on:
http://wyxs.net/web/ubuntu_daisy_player.html

We hope to hear from you.
With kind regards, also on behalf of Jos Lemmens,
Dirk Schouten

Aldo had recommended that site and program.

When we last spoke about Daisy Readers we mentioned the Firefox plug in and the program which Aldo recommended.

Also http://playingwithsid.blogspot.com/2009/11/daisy-books-on-linux.html

Bill Cox mentioned:

Thanks for the pointers!  That's just what I needed (both the Firefox
plugin and command line package).  I also found I can translate the
.xml file to speech easily enough... I use:

html2text -nobs < bookName.xml | uni2ascii -B > bookName.txt

Then I do some filtering for the 'say' program, like converting '...'
to pauses, and then use the say program to create a .wav for my phone.
 Works great!

Bill

Hi, I had it segfault on some books, but will test some more.
Does not look like this player fully implement the DAISY standard though.
With things like these, I feel "the more the merrier", but I think that
emerson should also be included.
It runs under gtk with orca.
I will test some more on this daisy-player by Joss Lemens.
Regards, Willem
